Dear Roz Savage MP,

I feel real dismay at the latest proposed guidance from the EHRC. It makes it unclear whether you can even organise something like a trans-inclusive women’s coffee morning, if it is a service open to the public. The sheer scale of exclusion advocated in this document is unbelievable, and it cannot possibly protect anybody, let alone our trans community.

This is a historic moment for LGBTQ+ rights in Britain, and what you do now as my MP matters a lot to me. Please support Nadia Whittome's motion (EDM 240) to disapprove the draft Code of Practice.

This guidance, the government’s own Equality Impact Assessment admits, would risk wide-ranging harms to trans people including a “disproportionate risk of violence and sexual assault" in some circumstances.

Service providers are told to ban trans people from any men’s or women’s space aligned with their gender, but that they can also kick trans people out of services for their gender assigned at birth. Where a ‘third’ service exists, providers are told to force trans people into it, and where one doesn’t? Nobody knows.

The unworkable guidance tells organisations to make decisions based on “physique or physical appearance”, which the impact assessment acknowledges risks increased harassment of anybody who doesn’t conform to traditional gender norms - not just trans people. Organisations are told to betray their own values or face litigation, the scale of which will keep this issue burning for years to come.

This would usher in a dark era of segregation, gender policing and human rights violations. This, clearly, is not how the Equality Act was intended to work.

We cannot be a country that allows this to happen. Wherever you stand on what a fair solution looks like, we cannot let this complete denial of trans life become statutory.

We must put aside parties, factions and differences. History will judge what happens here, and we are far outside the international norm.

Will you stand against this and support EDM 240 to reject the code?

An ageing economy with rising demands on health, social care and pensions needs workers. It also needs students, researchers, builders, carers, nurses, engineers and entrepreneurs. Cutting migration, which Starmer bizarrely claimed as a policy success last week, may be politically popular in the abstract, but it reduces labour supply, hits universities and care providers, worsens shortages and weakens growth. The future of US-Iranian negotiations remains clouded in uncertainty but even if an agreement on the Strait is reached soon, it will take months before the backlogs are cleared and supply lines get back to normal. The crisis however goes much deeper, because the current situation is the result of a catastrophic set of errors by the Trump administration. We have been witnessing the astonishing picture of one of the greatest powers the world has ever known wilfully weaken and undermine itself so that it no longer is either willing or able to play its accustomed role in the international system.
This is not an easy aspect of the current crisis to address for governments closely allied with the United States. They do not want to give up on the multitude of defence and security arrangements, including NATO, that have bound them together and have led them to look to Washington for leadership. It is even more awkward to acknowledge that one reason for this is that the President is unhinged, uninhibited in launching insults at foreign leaders, including the Pope, and with no coherent agenda other than servicing his own ego.
