An article about local artist Nigel Cornford, from the #Bexhill Observer in 1988, and an item from the exhibition of Nigel’s work which we held in 2017. Nigel worked in film and tv as a set designer, animator, puppet costumer, special effects person, puppeteer and more.

The piece in the paper features a black and white photograph of Nigel, holding one of his puppets, Toad. The story is about him winning an ACE award in America for his work on the animated puppet version of The Wind In The Willows. Nigel grew up in Bexhill and went on to work in film and tv designing puppets, costumes, special effects and more.

This is a model of a toy shop. It has the plate glass window filled with toys. The sign above reads T.Blundell & Son. There is a door next to the window and the surroundings of the window and the door are a pale green. In front of the shop are a highly stylised child in a yellow Mackintosh and a dog in a hat and coat.

C.1850/1860 machine and handmade two-piece dress of royal blue silk with black fringe trimmings. The bodice is boned with a back fastening. It has décolleté neckline and shell-shaped sleeves and a three-tiered skirt. It has a spare set of short sleeves. #Bexhill #Costume

The dress is displayed on a headless mannequin. There is a matching blue fabric choker with a central jewelled clasp and a matching parasol. There is a blue velvet bow around the waist.

The highly decorative plate features Britannia with her trident and a shield with the Union Jack on it. A lion is laying at her feet and ships on the sea behind her. There is a decorative border around the rim of the plate.

1950s cocktail/evening dress constructed in black grosgrain fabric, sleeveless with wide shoulder straps. It has back zip opening with fitted bodice & flared skirt which is fully lined. The bodice& skirt are heavily embroidered with colourful machine embroidery. Manufactured by London Town. #Bexhill

The dress is as described in the main post. It is hanging inside a glass panel on the wall. The embroidery is beautiful multicoloured flowers.

Tomorrow (11th July) we have the next in our series of illustrated talks by Ken Brooks. The topic of the talk is Understanding Fossils and it starts at 1.30pm. The cost is £10 (£8 for #Bexhill museum members) and includes refreshments and entry to the rest of the museum. Reposts of this appreciated.

The leaflet for the talk. It says “Bexhill Museum. Encouraging Discovery. Understanding Fossils. Ken Brooks. Bexhill Museum, Saturday 11th July at 1.30pm. In this illustrated talk we will look at some of the various aspects of fossils. These will include how they are formed, their importance in reconstructing ancient environments and the origins of present day species…” There is a photograph of a spiral shaped fossil.

This is our ‘Arab’ printing press, on display in our transport and technology gallery. Often considered to be the best press of its time it was designed to be easily disassembled and reassembled and one was even taken on the Shackleton Expedition! #Bexhill #Printing #Shackleton

This is viewing the press end on. There is blue and silver metal and wood, in its construction.

This is viewing it long side on. On one of the silver wheels it says Halifax. J.Wade patentee. The press is around the size of an old fashioned pram, albeit perhaps twice the height.

This is viewing it the other end on. In gold lettering on the blue metal it says Arab. To the right is a very large wheel, on the side of the press.

Borough brooch, presented to Frank Bond. He was alderman and mayor of #Bexhill from 1915-1916.

The brooch is a gold colour and is very ornate and rests on a deep red velvet background. At the bottom it says “Sol et salubritas” (sun and health, in Latin) and “incorporated 1902.”

This is our model of the Sovereign Light. This was a very popular local landmark for many years and could be spotted out at sea towards Eastbourne, warning ships of dangerous rocks. #Bexhill

The large model shows an open platform with helipad and crane, next to the light tower, immediately underneath this were the accommodation areas with railings all around. The whole was supported by a single large pillar beneath the structure.

The lamp is a dark metal with a handle to carry it from the top. The front is a wide circular aperture where the light would show.
