Product leader, musician & writer in central MA, USA. Tinkering with the internet in pursuit of creative independence. I work for @buffer.com. Music: kidlightbulbs.com Writing: bgreen.lol My app to help support artists:
Whoa this I did not see coming, especially after the layoff news: @bandcamp implemented the subsonic API so you can take your Bandcamp collection to open-source media players & infrastructure. I just set it up in seconds Honestly pretty cool, curious what this means for them
Finally got cross-client login & sync working for Unstream! What this means: - anyone can create a user account on Unstream, not just artists - you can save artists you want to support on the web app, and those sync to your mac app / browser extension / other devices (1/2)
I've been quiet about @buffer.com stuff! Well I have something to share today: we shipped a home screen for our web app 🏠 This was a fun project to work on because it's not a flashy new *feature*, but rather a new hub that brings together Buffer's tightly-integrated social toolkit. Here's mine!
Had a fun idea tonight to add generative AI policy markers to the music platforms in #unstream search results Deploying in a few minutes #fairtrademusic #indiemusic #ai #bandcamp #mirlo #ampwall #bandwagon #musicsky
It's fun that Unstream is becoming a trusted directory for independent artists & the best ways to support them. This is part of my vision: to make it as clear and easy as possible who know you are listening to, the fact that they're a real artist/band, and that they deserve your support.
Who's gonna be the 50th musician to claim an Unstream page??????? #indie #musicsky #fairtrademusic #faircamp #bandcamp #supportindieartists
Something I still hear all the time from creators: "What's the best time to post?" The typical answer: "it depends, just try stuff" 😅 That's exhausting. So we've made it less so, with ✨Smart Scheduling✨ It's part of a bigger shift to make Buffer smarter. Learn more: buffer.com/resources/sm...
Big #unstream update: the Mac app supports new release alerts! (Chrome soon, too!) Save the artists you want to support later; when they release something new, Unstream will let you know with a direct link to buy that release. Check it out at unstream.stream 🤘 #indiemusic #fairtrademusic #apps
Well, this is a very interesting development, #bandcamp source: www.reddit.com/r/BandCamp/c...
This is arguably the feature I'm most excited that we're bringing to @buffer.com since I joined the team. A calm (seriously, it's so... just calm) way of keeping up with your community across social platforms. It's truly going to be wonderful for all types of creators. Coming next Wednesday 😉
Something I thought would be fun: a diagram illustrating all the connective tissue across my music. So I made one in Figjam. I present to you: The Kid Lightbulbs song map buff.ly/a7wyjBO This does not go entirely into the archives, but shows the recurring references & motifs across my 4 albums.
I'm going to open up a preorder for INFINITE NORMAL (kid lightbulbs lp4) probably today or tomorrow. I haven't yet gotten a test pressing of the CD edition and I want to make sure it is all looking good first before I "publish" that. So here's the deal:
okay, now that the singles are out of the way: INFINITE NORMAL, kid lightbulbs album 4, will drop November 7. It'll have both a digital and physical (CD) release. Running time: 70:23 (this is why no vinyl...for now)
PERFORMANCE VERSIONS is out🤘🏻 This is a Bandcamp-exclusive EP containing five different takes (plus a coda!) on the newest Kid Lightbulbs single, "performance", from my upcoming album INFINITE NORMAL.
my last single was an angry anxious rant about surviving late capitalism, so it's only fitting that my next single is going to be an angry jaded rant about the performative nature of late capitalism it's appropriately titled: "performance". @brennamenz.com is on it. 10/3 bandcamp, 10/10 streaming
I am thrilled to announce "the grass is quicksand", the second single off my upcoming album INFINITE NORMAL, in time for the next Bandcamp Friday.
An experiment: I've decided to make all my music pay-what-you-want on Bandcamp. You can now get the entire Kid Lightbulbs discography for free if you like! All I ask is for your email address – this also gets you reliable updates anytime I release something new. Why am I doing this? 👇
I love working in dark mode so much that sometimes I forget to disable it when sharing @buffer.com screenshots, even though it's not done and still being tested internally 😅 I guess this is a backhanded way of saying dark mode is finally coming to Buffer on web! Likely late summer / early fall.
Third announcement of the week: The first single off INFINITE NORMAL will be "womb", the opening track. It's out now exclusively on Bandcamp, along with a b-side, "come alive", which will *not* be on the album. Get it here, or better yet, save it for Bandcamp Friday tomorrow: buff.ly/Ghzei1J
Big update: I'm removing my first 2 albums from the streaming platforms. Not enough people who haven't also bought them on Bandcamp are listening. They're exclusively at Bandcamp and kidlightbulbs.com. Singles are still up and getting some plays.
My kid has declared that it’s “bring your bear to work” day
REMIXED CASTLE, in full, is now coming to streaming. The last remix in the cycle is the "belong" remix by @bad-years.bsky.social – a dear internet-friend & collaborator – who took "belong 2" and its sister track "we don't belong" (from LP1) and molded them into this spiritual meditative thing. 1/3
“don’t wait” - reimagined by @loopsnake.bsky.social as a moody, sprawling 10-minute club banger - out next Friday 7/11. This remix is delicious. artists.landr.com/056870336657
I am excited to share the next REMIXED CASTLE release: “waste me away” as reimagined by @superscience.xyz This remix is wild. It starts like a smoky film noir, and grows - via the signature SuperScience synth metal sound - into this intense fireball of emotion.
