i can only attribute the quality of this kale’s health to the fact that there is a mature live oak shading it out for much of the day, but somehow i’ve found myself with kale in july in north florida. lettuce a cool season crop but thought i’d share this fun out of season kale🤠

Okay listen up, I wish I were a little more zooted when describing this one. I took this picture on portrait mode, of two lacinato kale plants in my yard. Lacinato kale is also called “dino kale” because the leathery, bubbling texture of the leaves has a strange skin-like quality if you are a child or zooted yourself. The kale’s color is almost what we’d call “glaucous”: a blue-gray sort of shade. Beneath these plants, but blurry due to the “portrait mode” setting, are cowpeas (“Puerto Rican Black Bean”) and two varieties of basil (Thai basil and an Italian variety called “Prospera” that I propagated by cutting). The grass around the veg bed is patchy but not entirely absent.

A dusk view of a JEA utility pole, selected for replacing and awaiting removal. A pileated woodpecker has obviously been finding it worthwhile to gouge massive holes, wrapped in an ascending line to to the top, in search of insects. Four gouged out caverns, likely 6-8” diameter, create habitat for other creatures. This is the kind of specimen that would go in a museum, to educate children about the value of snags in forests.

Rocco Morabito’s legendary photograph of JEA linemen on the job, one of whom was electrocuted while working and the other provided life-saving CPR. The zebras from the broadway musical, The Lion King. Performers are dressed and painted to resemble a herd of zebras. They have prosthetic zebra busts worn over their shoulders, and prosthetic zebra bodies worn over their backs. The performers’ human legs are in tights painted with stripes to be the forelegs, while their unpainted arms are controlling poles that are attached to the prosthetic hind legs. They wear head pieces that resemble zebra farther away.

Performers from CATS wear stylized costumes and head pieces that alter the perceived bodily and facial proportions of the performers, to vaguely resemble felines.

it’s been so hot & dry that i’ve been collecting surface water runoff from *the canopy* and the house. no buckets were lost, but the canopy armature is for sure toast. the neighbor can’t afford a tree removal so i’m not pushing the issue but… 20ft of trunk will take out almost anything.

Storm destruction: a busted canopy tent still trying to protect the odd bushel, wheelbarrow, hand truck, industrial cart left on the slab under its shelter. Barely distinguishable are the virginia creeper-wrapped oak branches just in front of the beleaguered, twisted camphor branches that are still bearing the weight of the trunk that fell.

A pitbull when the job doesn’t need a pitbull

After cleaning up, the trunk is about as wide as a cinder block next to it.

rescued a baby owl that was stuck in the street on my way home. called my partner to bring something to help shepherd it into the grass, so she grabbed a box from aldi

Somehow both the dinkiest widdle baby but also an absolute unit of downy feathers: a baby barred owl that got itself stuck and confused on a residential 2-way street at night, perched on the edge of a green bell pepper cardboard box from Aldi, lit by the headlamp of a concerned neighbor.

this week in the life

Wearing Hi-Vis while preparing to limb & buck a branch that fell in the easement that guests use to access the property where I work. Oh, and, the hat I brought with me to stay warm, which is Crystal Methyd merch that I bought the last year Murray & Peter brought Drag Race Christmas to Jacksonville. RIP.

Finally finished turning out my collected cat waste for a third batch of cat & corn husk compost. While collecting at home I act as if it’s humanure and add egg shell biochar to help with odor. When turning into this cubic yard space, there is opportunity for airflow thanks to sideways cinders and lateral protection from rodents thanks to new hardware cloth. I added leaf & wood chip mulch, as well as freshly cut grass and occasionally more biochar to the pile as I built it, and watered it at the end of building it up. The composted cat waste goes to ornamentals first, then after 2-3 years in place, it can be dug out and spread to edible beds.

Seasoning agricultural waste at a local nonprofit urban farm/incubator hub for my region of town. I render the roselle hibiscus stems into biochar and then process it, bag it, and offer it as an on-farm byproduct of the harvest. A native flowering vine called coral honeysuckle grows on the welded wire enclosure for the beehives. Stacks of roselle hibiscus stalks on pallets get more gray and brittle by the day, contrasting with the soft foliage of the flowering vine.

A yellow rat snake makes themself at home in the bathtub serving as a worm bin on the property. If you build it, they will come or whatever. A family of rats kept trying to nest in the worm bin so this is a vast improvement to that scenario.

my city is a delta city and as much as we average citizens wish the “tree mitigation fund” from rampant development translated into actual restored tree canopy, it probably won’t at this rate. anyway i’ve decided to just livestake willow in retention pond areas along our coasts lol

A busy late winter/early spring view of a tidal retention pond on city-owned property. Visible in the foreground is a tall grass called bluestem, frost-killed cattail reeds and a little juncus grass. In the middle distance is an evergreen called saltbush. But circled with the iPhone’s drawing tool are two collections: in white are two to three year-old willow saplings which were livestaked from a parent tree who was removed by developers. They have broken their winter dormancy and have bright like green leaves and flowers. Circled in red, among the pine cones are 5 more livestakes, which have not yet broken dormancy. The goal here is to have a collection of young willow to coppice annually or biannually, because it’s not just oysters which can clean waterways overloaded with nutrient. Symbiosis between local craftspeople sourcing their materials in a way that works with the plant’s lifecycle can also have an impact.

my city does something i think is stupid, which is relying on tech from ARID REGIONS to “cool” people down. they bought a lot of misting machines for urban parks. our region just needs shade and moving air to cool people down - the already humid air is the killer! fan under shade is the way

This is a view from just underneath a 10x10 canopy tent, whose blue cover blurs with the sky. We are looking upward at an 8” battery powered shop fan, simply hanging on the folding supports of the collapsible canopy tent. A pine tree and a Chinese Tallow tree are visible past the tent canopy. The fan provides moving air under the shade of the tent, which together offer profound relief from the humid heat.

Banana stalks killed by annual frost rest on an orange wheelbarrow.

A view of the process of separating the dried leaves from the slowly rotting, latex and water-content full “trunk” of the banana. The dried leaves were folded in half and tucked around the stems of potato plants, and the wet stalks were cut into chunks to enrich a new section of the same bed.

Prior to this image, I removed the previous vertically installed sections of split camphor, which formed the bed border. Due to the neighbor’s section of wooden fence casting longer shadows in prime cool-weather growing season, I decided to forfeit the bed space previously dedicated to attempting to cultivate, and simply extend the bed which gets adequate sun. I then hammered in sections of newly removed & dried camphor branches, as well as 1-2” diameter sections of cured bamboo donated by a friend.

I did not fill in the bed where I extended it, but took the opportunity to remove weeds as they sprouted, if they sprouted. Today I filled in the blank space with the wet chunks of banana. To the right of the row of turnips you can see the potato plants poking out, just under the snow peas climbing the trellis (competing with blackberries).

Not pictured is the ~20 gallons of compost I spread over the area and the ~5 gallons of sifted, decayed woodchip mulch I spread over the compost. I watered this in and will probably wait a week to put some sunn hemp in the pile. I may or may not try peppers here.

it has been 5 years since i was asked to find the answer to a simple question, about average annual precipitation in my region. finding wild ranges (bc: subtropics), the most haunting information i found was a centuries-old continuous dataset with a glaring gap in data points

Between the years of 1861 and 1866 they did not complete the calculation for annual rainfall because they did not record the rainfall every month during the years we officially recognize as the American Civil War. It strikes me that if nothing else, someone’s job was collecting this apolitical data - except when a far more pressing political event was actively taking them from that work.

Since computer smarter than monkey I had to first route from my home to the hub, then the hub to the nearest bus stop to my job. That stop is a 33 minute walk according to other mapping apps. So not accounting for waiting at the hub, a 35-45 minute drive is now a 3-4 hour commute to *get to work*.

Walking and bus options provided by JTA’s trip planner that range from 56 minutes to 1 hour and 26 minutes to get to the transit hub from my house, which would take me 12 minutes to drive to. Meanwhile reader, we use my vehicle on site and to haul materials from retailers, so even if I didn’t drive, someone else’s vehicle would become the work vehicle.

Trip options from JTA’s trip planner to get from the hub to an intersection that is 30 minutes away by foot from my job. Trips on the second leg of the one-way commute are an hour to an hour and 15 minutes long.

In the summer of 2010 I exclusively used a bike & bus combo to get around town because of Deepwater Horizon. Just now, 15 years later, I tried using my city’s transit system’s trip planner to give me a route, no matter how many transfers, from my home to work. “There are no results available”
