I realized I hadn't taken a good #butterfly photo all year long. Fortunately my yard is full of native plants like Wild Bergamot that attracts them. 390 snaps later I was able to get this image of an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail yesterday afternoon. #insects #nativeplants

Poor little Tree Swallow fell asleep at the entrance to its nest box. This my yard's third brood of this species this year. We also had two broods of bluebirds. Pretty good as I only have two bird houses. #birds

Here are some more. It's really an amazing place, it's the best place to see butterflies in the entire US and the birds are amazing too. They unfortunately survive in the tiny pockets of protected land that haven't been developed (mostly for agriculture).

Here's an idea of the incredible wildlife you can find in southern Texas, currently threatened by rapid border wall construction, environmental damage, and SpaceX's lust for wildlife refuge land. And these are just the #birds and #butterflies. All of these photos are mine from Dec. 2023.

I love red mulberries. It's one of my favorite native plants to eat. So why not drink it as booze when you can? Last week I enjoyed a bottle of Mead that was made with native persimmons. I love foraging native persimmons after a frost. Probably the second best native fruit after mulberries.

I've been trying to grow this plant for four years now and I finally got one to bloom! This is False Indigo, a plant native to Virginia. I may have to get more of it now that I know a spot where it is happy!
