I hate to be cynical about this but when I see stuff like this I think “Citizens United.” The enormous amounts of money in politics means the wealthy get their way in politics/policy. This amount of money involved is relatively new.
First that comes to mind is Thrak. Might not count, as it’s the “double trio” lineup w/ two drummers.

That's awesome. The ones I go back to are James Judd/New Zealand doing Vaughan Williams, as well as Andrew Penny's cycle of Arnold symphonies. (off the top of my head)
