Meeting these demands, especially at peak times, will not be possible without greatly expanding the capacity of electricity grids, which is costly30 and, in many countries, will probably require the construction of new coal-fired power plants. However, our results indicate that peak electricity demand during the hottest times of the day could be substantially lowered if air conditioner use is complemented with convective flow from residential fan use. Secondary societal benefits could also include a reduced risk of power disruptions or outages with existing electrical infrastructure.

In conclusion, the world is experiencing a climate emergency, with global temperatures continually rising due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. A widespread strategy to cope with hot weather is the use of air conditioning. However, this causes a positive feedback loop in which air conditioner use leads to high electricity consumption, often delivered by fossil fuel power stations, which contribute to further increases in emissions, which, in turn, warm the climate. Moving indoor air with electric fans can raise the temperature threshold of heat discomfort that is the predominant driver of air conditioner use. Fans could therefore offer an effective strategy to reduce emissions attributable to air conditioner use in hot weather, and consequently serve as a possible abatement option. In this study, using Australia as a proof-of-principle model, we found that the widespread adoption of fans to elevate the temperature at which air conditioner units are turned on has the potential to reduce energy demand and emissions attributable to air conditioner use by up to 70–75%, making them an attractive mitigation option for meeting Paris Agreement commitments.

Lucelia is a passionate, global leader in the resilience of communities and buildings in a changing climate, involved in several major sustainability projects focused on energy, carbon management and comfort.

She is Deputy Director of the University of Nottingham Energy Institute, and Founder and Director of Transport, Mobility & Cities @Nottingham, an initiative bringing colleagues from all faculties together to tackle the challenges our cities face working with industry, authorities and catapults. Prof Rodrigues also runs the MArch in Architecture and Sustainable Design masters programme.

She is the Head of Department of Architecture and Built Environment and the first female professor in the 178-year history of the department (Est. 1843 as Nottingham Government School of Design).

Air conditioning (AC) is a mature and widely available technology that uses electricity to maintain comfortable indoor environments during ambient high temperature periods. While institutional factors have led to historically high AC prevalence in the United States, adoption has increased in both Europe and the developing world1,2,3,4,5. Given projected future growth of cooling demand6,7 and AC ownership worldwide4,8, a major concern is that climate change-driven increases in the frequency and intensity of high temperature extremes9 will amplify electricity demand to levels that exceed power systems’ capacity, adversely affecting reliability10, and leading to blackouts that can ultimately leave populations without power precisely when cooling, and the electricity it relies on, are most needed. Future cooling needs for adaptation to climate change can potentially exacerbate the difficulty and cost of mitigation, by increasing the demand for electric power, and in turn, the demand for energy carriers used for power generation. Integrated assessment model (IAM) simulations suggest that accommodating the climate-induced changes in energy demand11 will require substantial additional generation capacity and increased use of fossil fuels, leading to more CO
emissions and necessitating more stringent mitigation policies to achieve decarbonization7.
