As a general rule, Shen doesn’t swear. Something about it is immensely satisfying.
“Let the record show,” I dictate, kicking my bike back into gear, “that everyone here was fully aware of my proclivity for absconding before we ever touched down on this planet.”
<How did you disable the tech?>
Is he trying to distract me, or is he not suspicious of Raon yet? “A little tactic I call making friends,” I send back. “Also how I got a bike and supplies. You should try it, darling.” I’m being such a dick. It’s either that, or panic.

I can’t even tell if this is a threat or if he’s trying to express concern. I fumble for the tablet and switch the whole damn thing off. Then I remember Silver or Stray might try to contact me and switch it back on. My thoughts are scattered in every direction. I’m definitely not on any kind of trail anymore. There’s radio silence for a while, and I glide through the dark wilderness, rain pattering around me, foliage brushing my sides, snakes watching curiously from their cool, soggy outcroppings. A strange, beautiful, alien world that I should have belonged to.
Finally, as the night starts creeping toward early twilight, I get a message from Stray: <Silver says you’re closing in. Is it still lucky if I give you some directions? Not to interfere with your process, but you’re gonna go over a ravine in about two minutes.>

The bus wheezes on its way, and Tiago gives me a little wave akin to a salute. “You’re a cool dude, Leto,” he says. “See you around.” And away he clanks with his bags full of maybe photography equipment. I’ve forgotten to ask where he’s going.

I’m heading the other way, past the overgrown graveyard with its spindly iron fence and around the corner to the neighborhood where I grew up. The houses here huddle nervously together, the once-bright paint on their shingles now long faded and peeling away. Most of them have been divvied up into multi-family units, so that extra doors and porches are haphazardly stuck on here and there. Too many people’s junk crowds the little brown yards out front, and the half-paved driveways are stuffed with dirty vehicles.

“So you want me to play mad scientist with you as my test subject? Absolutely not. Get up from there.”

We take Onyong through wooded trails to Red Cove Beach and end up sitting on a decrepit bench overlooking the sea, passing a cigarette back and forth. Further out is an old lighthouse, long disused, at the end of a stone pier. The maroon water below bubbles fretfully, leaving a pinkish froth on its surface. There’s some nutcase out there, at the base of the lighthouse, who keeps leaning over the pier as though looking into the depths. People do that sometimes — the fumes will mess your mind, get you kind of high. They’ll also drive you mad, eventually, if you’re not careful. Our grandmother died of it in her sixties; she was a proper pollution huffer.
We grew up here, with this view, this air, this sludgy, noxious beach. In the distance, the Beldam Bridge stretches the mile over into Briarwood. I ask Aster, “Does Harrowville have any big factories?”
She exhales smoke in a pungent cloud. “Hell no,” she says. “Wouldn’t want to fuck up the view from the university.” And then she laughs.

Bullshit. “The program was dissolved a decade ago.”
“Yes and no. The experimental base was moved elsewhere for scientific conservation. Your old January facility continues to train acquisitions, albeit with more sufficient safety standards than were in place for your cohort.” She comes around the desk and leans back against it so she’s looking down at me. “Rather, I should say, they were continuing. The facility appears to be compromised.”
“Compromised,” I repeat. A ghost of the place flits through my mind: echo-filled training halls, air thick with wood polish and sweat and the clattering of weapons; steel and glass laboratories, needles and straps and screams; sun-kissed gardens and sweet red sap tea and kissing a boy behind the harbinger tree. “Good.”
“There are children there.”
I let out a bitter laugh. “And I’m sure their safety is your priority, is it?”

“It’s the same stuff.” Without thinking, I reach for your wrist, meaning to show you that the pearly, sinewy string of the friendship bracelet is exactly the same as the longer strands of goo laced along the wall like the web of a talentless spider. But I’ve forgotten how you reacted before, and this time you’re even quicker. You snatch my wrist before I can make contact and your forearm snaps tight against my triceps, effectively arm-barring me straight into the goo.
