5/5 I The story of Ruebeni is fantastical but true a Black Jew who arrives in Italy seeking to start a war between Dar al-Islam & Christendom to bring the Jews back to Eretz Yisrael, yet his diary is mundane but interesting window of the 1520’s Mediterranean.
5/5 a great history of both the natural history of the Dead Sea and of the human history of the Dead Sea. If you’re curious about one of the most remote and least green (plant life) places on earth this book with guide you through a place that seems to draw humans in.
4/5 a thorough history of Ethiopian Jews. There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about Ethiopian Jews and their Judaism. This seeks to dispel them, and discusses them in their Ethiopian context. Their place in Ethiopian society was similar to that of Jews in European and Muslims societies.

Fun fact when this came out my great-grandfather, a veteran of the Jewish Legion in WWI, took my aunt a cousin to see it, and at some point, jumped up and shouted “LIES, LIES” and grabbed his grandkid’s hands and ran out of the theater.
5/5 Lion Feuchtwanger’s historical fiction of Josephus’s adult life in which he witnesses the Great Revolt and the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem. Written in 1932 on the eve of a calamity that would surpass that of its subject. Themes include the barbarity of Rome/the west and Jewishness.
3.5/5 the life & legacy of Yohanan ben Zakkai. He helped bridge between the spiritual, cultural, and legal traditions of the Judean/Jewish people centered around the Jerusalem Temple, to the collective spiritual, cultural, and legal traditions of the Jewish people centered on prayer and Jerusalem.
It’s too early to assess turnout but here is where we are today with just partial early vote numbers and vote by mail requests and returned.
4/5 Interesting exploration of the non-theological origins of the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible. If you’re inclined to explore this theory it’s a good starting point of both the historicity of the Tanakh and the subject itself.
