A radio show playing new & retro groove, art pop, psychedelic & more. Companion show Ongaku Sessions is deep listening on vinyl, inspired by Japanese jazz kissas. Hosted by 30-year public radio programmer & DJ Mark Duggan.
Box of Visions ep104 is out now, full of new music like Joan As Police Woman, Tricky, Ghost Funk Orchestra, and Bonobo with Arooj Aftab. Yes, please. 👂🔗: boxofvisions.com Box of Visions is a radio show of new unusual, and imaginative music, heard on a growing network of public radio stations.
On the table tonight: The Band of Blacky Ranchette is a Giant Sand side effort. Basically Howe Gelb + friends, including Neko Case and Calexico. It’s the “Tucson Sound”: Spare, yet epic; the oft-used line “dusty...” A swamp-cooled soundtrack for a saunter to the beer store on a 107-degree day.
“I love the thrill of putting on a record and feeling like you got the wrong one from the factory.” - Attributed to Jim James
Sunsets in California aren’t as brazenly psychedelic as Colorado. Still and all, the sky show the other evening impressed me.
Episode no. 123 of Box of Visions is out now, offering more sounds of different persuasions. New stuff from Boards of Canada, Kelela + Hammock w/ Flaming Lips. Older numbers include Ultravox. Box of Visions plays abstract groove, art pop, psychedelic, soul, and more! Listen: boxofvisions.com
We’re losing more jazz giants. Reflecting on this, I cued up Zimbabwe (1983) this evening and poured a couple fingers of Japanese whisky. RIP the great pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, also known as Dollar Brand. #musicsky

Happy birthday to electronic music legend Morton Subotnick, who turns 93 today (April 14). I had the pleasure of seeing him perform at the Lafayette Electronic Arts Festival in Colorado on 2 May 2023, with Lillevan providing visuals. 📸 from the event:
I'm honored to report that www.ksut.org was recognized for the fifth consecutive year as 'Best Radio Station Website - Small Market' by the Colorado Broadcasters Association. I'm the site's architect and managing editor. I'm proud to be a part of the @ksutpublicradio.bsky.social team.
The Scully 280 captured Hendrix, the Stones + countless Stax & Muscle Shoals releases. I learned how to cut tape on them in the late ‘80s. I’d stay hours after my radio shift, splicing at the Scullys until 4 am. Digital is quick but I sometimes miss the hands-on artistry of pencil, tape & blade.
Weekend spins at Jan’s Place Vinyl Bar in San Luis Obispo. Vinyl, libation, conversation, communion.
