A good Monday night record

On the table tonight: The Band of Blacky Ranchette is a Giant Sand side effort. Basically Howe Gelb + friends, including Neko Case and Calexico. It’s the “Tucson Sound”: Spare, yet epic; the oft-used line “dusty...” A swamp-cooled soundtrack for a saunter to the beer store on a 107-degree day.

Happy birthday to electronic music legend Morton Subotnick, who turns 93 today (April 14). I had the pleasure of seeing him perform at the Lafayette Electronic Arts Festival in Colorado on 2 May 2023, with Lillevan providing visuals. 📸 from the event:

I'm honored to report that www.ksut.org was recognized for the fifth consecutive year as 'Best Radio Station Website - Small Market' by the Colorado Broadcasters Association. I'm the site's architect and managing editor. I'm proud to be a part of the @ksutpublicradio.bsky.social team.

The Scully 280 captured Hendrix, the Stones + countless Stax & Muscle Shoals releases. I learned how to cut tape on them in the late ‘80s. I’d stay hours after my radio shift, splicing at the Scullys until 4 am. Digital is quick but I sometimes miss the hands-on artistry of pencil, tape & blade.

An open-reel tape machine. Two reels are loaded and the tape is threaded through the machine’s transport. The machine is on, as evidenced by the glowing VU meters in the input modules. A faceplate reads the manufacturer as ‘Scully’ and the model number ‘280’ is stenciled on the input modules.
