Adrian Sánchez, a Venezuelan infielder whose big-league career spanned 106 games over parts of four seasons, once ate 10 1/2 cheesesteaks in a single day. That record, set in 2021, remains the standard for a player. The New York Mets ate 103 cheesesteaks on one day in 2014. Recently, some visiting nutritionists and dietitians have engaged in their own competition, which delights Michaels and the other cooks.

Terry Ellis’s fixer wore an overcoat, a multicolored ascot, a Rolex. He had a husky voice and a good suntan. He reminded Ellis of the English actor Ray Winstone, best known for playing hard men in films like “Sexy Beast” and “The Departed.” Ellis, who was himself a hard man, sought inspiration from crime movies, the way an artist scrutinizes the canvases of the great masters; it was a viewing of “Ocean’s Eleven” that had led to the most successful phase of his criminal career. By the winter of 2007, Ellis had become one of his generation’s most dependable, and accomplished, heistmen.

But the problem seems especially acute at Netflix. Why is that? I think it's a case of two bits of organizational philosophy that have finally come back to hurt the streaming giant. One is the binge release. All those other problems regarding season length and duration between seasons are at least mitigated a little by the fact that people watch seasons on other streamers play out over the course of 2-3 months. It's not a ton of time, but it's enough to have conversations with people about it, and to think about the show between episodes. And it shortens the gap between seasons, even a little. When your shows can be consumed in a rush over a weekend, or a week at most, they become much less mentally and emotionally sticky. Even if you liked the season, the chances of you remembering or caring about it when the next one arrives 12-36 months later aren't great.
