Ratzel recognized how far the extermination of America’s indigenous populations had progressed by the 1870s. He had visited California in the final years of a genocidal campaign that had decimated the indigenous population. And yet he only rarely expressed any pity for a race, or species, for that matter, that had been eliminated. ...America’s native population, he argued, had not managed to move beyond a huntergatherer society when the first European colonists arrived. The Indians had failed to build towns and cities and exploit natural riches such as iron ore and gold. Their thinking was irrational and superstitious and they were prone to alcohol and gambling addictions. Ultimately, Ratzel came to the conclusion that the extermination of the indigenous Americans was necessary because they had proven inferior in the natural struggle for space. “One is placed in a peculiar position in regard to the displacement and annihilation of a whole race,” he wrote in 1877. “As a sensitive human being, one cannot approve of the means by which this struggle is fought; but as a thinking human being, one cannot avoid feeling satisfied by its outcome.” The only way, he claimed, in which the indigenous Americans might find their place in American society was if they were as “scattered and few” as Europe’s Sinti and Roma. He was quick to add that anyone who had witnessed the Roma in Hungary would surely recognize the “general harmfulness” that these populations exerted within a Volk. “Such entirely different levels of civilization as the Californians and the Indians are even less likely to coexist in the long run; the strong simply washes the weak away.” This, surely, was natural selection at work.

A key Vatican II document rejected by the SSPX is one that, among other things, deplored antisemitism in every form and repudiated the “deicide” charge that blamed Jews as a people for Christ’s death. The Vatican crafted the document repudiating it as the church reckoned with the role traditional Christian teaching had played in the Holocaust.

The SSPX today says it rejects accusations that it ever taught or practiced antisemitism, and the SSPX distanced itself from one of the original 1988 bishops, the late Bishop Richard Williamson, when he denied the Holocaust.
