The lamentations were performed by a type of priest and ritual performer known as the gala. They appear as men in most social contexts, but the lamentations were performed in emesal, a version of the Sumerian language that was otherwise restricted to female figures, especially goddesses; and some Old Babylonian sources suggest that the gala were associated with gender-ambiguous activities. The philologist Uri Gabbay has suggested that in earlier periods, the gala may have occupied a third-gender role, but the evidence is unclear.

A much more clear-cut example of a gender-subverting role in Sumerian culture is the group of ritual performers associated with Inana, who are also, especially in the Hymn, depicted as carrying out lamentations. The Hymn, l. 80–92, describes how Inana created the pilipili, an otherwise little-known group of ritual lamenters who are given a broken spear (a traditional symbol of masculinity) “as if they were men,” implying both a change and an ambiguity in their gender identity.

I may have done it… I may have found the worst floorplan I’ve ever seen

For your consideration, 218 Woodham Ave in Mildura. Enter the house through living room. The next door is into the dining area. From here you can walk through into a weird wonky kitchen or turn into a perfectly square hallway. The square hallway gives you access to a bathroom or a bedroom. From the bedroom you can access, that’s right: another bedroom. This bedroom is labelled “primary bedroom” on the plan. The primary bedroom has two other doors. One of them opens onto… a third bedroom. This bedroom is weirdly long and narrow and has an ensuite. The other door from the primary bedroom opens onto a sunroom. It also windows onto this sunroom. The first bathroom also has windows onto this sunroom. From the sunroom you can go back into the wonky kitchen, which terminates in a weird pantry, or you can exit the house in order to enjoy “access to the laundry” which is a separate building that shares a wall with the pantry. The real estate photos show the sunroom is being used as a fourth bedroom, which means in order to reach the long skinny bedroom you must first walk through: two! other! bedrooms!
