Oh, the picture saved wrong. Here's the complete chart. Studies like this demonstrate over and over again that the lowest mortality risk is in the "overweight" range of BMI and "underweight" is even worse than "obese", but they're never really interested in talking about that.

Two side by side charts from a research paper on BMI & mortality risk. They demonstrate a very pronounced U-shape curve with the bottom of the curve (lowest-risk) clearly being in the 25-30 BMI range. Notably BMI under 20 is significantly higher risk than BMI in the 30-40 range, only clearly being eclipsed at 40+.

The chart even accounts for confounding factors of deaths within 24 months (i.e. people who were losing weight to terminal illness) and smokers (who tend to be lower weight and also much higher risk), which only moves the graph slightly without changing the overall shape or the conclusion that "overweight" category is the best for longevity.

Everyone's deservedly tearing into this one but I feel compelled to point out the incredible bad faith of this take. They LITERALLY DID make all the same arguments that gay rights really threatened their way of life! You, personally, are endorsing those arguments against trans people right now!

But I think trans identity really threatens the underpinnings of gender and gender hierarchy in a way that gay identity only kind of brushes up against. And you can see that in the issues that the right has pinpointed, like gender-segregated spaces, sports, and bathrooms, and for a political movement that is really invested in a gender hierarchy and gender norms, transness is super threatening. They can make the argument that “This really threatens our way of life” in a way that gay marriage or whatever doesn’t, where you just have to kind of don’t pay attention to that if you don’t want to.

This paragraph is especially insane because those conflicts are defined by nuclear deterrence principles! The lesson of Ukraine and Iran is that nations with nukes have near unlimited rein for aggression against those without. Anduril's complaint is that non-nuclear nations get to fight back at all.
