Also, Maryland has the most “child” routes of any one interstate; every auxiliary route of I-95 exists here aside from I-995. I-595 is unsigned US 50 from the beltway down to exit 24. You can even see where the shield would have been placed on certain signs!

Route 50 east heading past the interchange with the beltway. The control city sign for Route 50 holds space for an Interstate 595 shield, but ultimately was left out as to not cause further driver confusion

Birmingham. It was, and remains, the kind of encounter that is a regular occurrence in Black people's lives, as this story from Hezekiah Jackson captured vividly:

I was way out in the suburbs because a fellow who is a friend of mine works for a cleaning service. We were at an affair and he had missed his ride. So, he wanted to know if I would carry him to work. The service that he worked for cleans up a lot of big white churches. This church was way down in the suburbs. So I drove him down there, and there was this huge church with all this prop. erty. It was in a cul-de-sac. I dropped him off and I turned around.

When I got to the top of this hill, the police surrounded me. was looking in the rearview mirror. I put my hands on the steering wheel. They seemed to have a drill, like they had practiced it.

Two came this way [from the front]. Two came that way [from the sidel. Two came that way [from the other side]. And one was at the back of the car.

Because I had been to this affair, I had on a suit, tie, everything.
So one of the officers says, "Are you lost, reverend?"
I said, "No, I'm not lost."
He said, "Well, can we help you with something?" I said, " just gave someone a ride to work."
He [the police officer] acted like he didn't believe me. He said,
"So where do they work?" And I knew the name because / had just happened to look at the big marquee to the church because it's a big nondenominational church. He said, "Oh, okay, We will help you get to the expressway. We will help you!"

So they [the police officers] escorted me all the way to the on ramp. I didn't say anything but "Thank you." I was in this

unfamiliar place that was obviously unfriendly and all I wanted to do was get out of there. So he wanted to lead me to the place [the on-ramp]. And i said, "Thank you very much." And then when I got to the on-ramp of the expressway, he said "Well, reverend, you can go on home now."

In his mind, it was not possible that I could live out there. In a lot of their minds in the suburban communities, they do consider them sundown communities. They [the police and the residents] feel like, if we live there, they should already know us. If they don't know us or we're visiting someone, it's problematic.

Jackson's story sounds as if it was from the period during which The Green Book was published, when there were many sundown towns and suburbs across the United States. But, in fact, this incident happened in 2017.

I’m still salty about the “bloop” getting shelved, would have been a gamechanger!

Imagine of WMATA’s proposed “bloop” or Blue Line Loop. New stations include National Harbor, Oxon Hill, Forest Heights, Buzzard Point, St. Elizabeth’s, Georgetown, and West End. The Blue Line in this diagram also served Union Station and Mt Vernon Square, and Farragut North/West are connected via tunnel.

This proposal was ultimately shelved

This is the intersectionality that’s missing from a lot of urbanist discourse tbh. Car-centric design sucks for sure, but we can’t ignore the reality of how different Black people’s relationship to transportation was/is due to history.
