When reaching end of the notes for Percy collection when she reached last poems he wrote. Later in the chapter this also how she described the arrival of Shelley’s boat as ‘It was thus that short-sighted mortals welcomed Death, he having disguised his grim form in a pleasing mask!’

Diary entry. I think still in her early twenties but years since the tragedy and her feelings

Journal, October 26.-Time rolls on, and what does it bring?
What can I do? How change my destiny? Months change their names, years their cyphers. My brow is sadly trenched,
the
blossom of youth faded. My mind gathers wrinkles. What will become of me?
How long it is since an emotion of joy filled my once exulting heart, or beamed from my once bright eyes. I am young still, though age creeps on apace; but I may not love any but the dead.
I think that an emotion of joy would destroy me, so strange would it be to my withered heart. Shelley had said-
Lift not the painted veil which men call life.
Mine is not painted; dark and enshadowed, it curtains out all happiness, all hope. Tears fill my eyes; well may I weep, solitary girl! The dead know you not; the living heed you not. You sit in your lone room, and the howling wind, gloomy prognostic of winter, gives not forth so despairing a tone as the unheard sighs your ill-fated heart breathes.
I was loved once! still let me cling to the memory; but to live for oneself alone, to read, and communicate your reflections to none; to write, and be cheered by none; to weep, and in no bosom; no more on thy bosom, my Shelley, to spend my tears-

misery!
Such is the Alpha and Omega of my tale. I can speak to none.
Writing this is useless; it does not even soothe me; on the contrary, it irritates me by showing the pitiful expedient to which I am reduced.
I have been a year in England, and, ungentle England, for what have I to thank you? For disappointment, melancholy, and tears; for unkindness, a bleeding heart, and despairing thoughts. I wish, England, to associate but one idea with theeimmeasurable distance and insurmountable barriers, so that I never, never might breathe thine air more.

I cannot describe to you what I felt in the first moment when, fording this river, I felt the water splash about our wheels. We sent messengers along the coast towards Genoa and to Via Reggio; nothing had been found more than the Lancetta; reports were brought us; we hoped; and yet to tell you all the agony we endured during those twelve days, would be to make you conceive a universe of pain-each moment intolerable, and giving place to one still worse.

Some time after Castlereagh's death, Lord Byron wrote a quip about his grave:

Asked by other members of parliament to specify what that meant exactly, Tillschneider said, "Anti-German art is German art that doesn't want to be German." He mentioned as an example an opera production he had seen some years ago; the classical German composer's work was revisited through a "feminist deconstructivist" lens that didn't please him and corresponds to what he sees as "anti-German art."

And as to America, I remember an observation of his, "that it was easier to form than unform or reform, and that even the United States were too young for us to judge of their duration; that the President had more power than the head of a constitutional government ought to have; a power too dangerous, —a wider field for corruption;" and Shelley hated slavery too sincerely in all its forms, not. to reprobate the existence of that crying evil, a disgrace to humanity, and the eighteenth century.

notes to the work, Mary Shelley explains the author's goals:
He was animated to greater zeal by compassion for his fellow-creatures. His sympathy was excited by the misery with which the world is bursting. He witnessed the sufferings of the poor, and was aware of the evils of ignorance. He desired to induce every rich man to despoil himself of superfluity, and to create a brotherhood of property and service, and was ready to be the first to lay down the advantages of his birth. He was of too uncompromising a disposition to join any party. He did not in his youth look forward to gradual improvement: nay, in those days of intolerance, now almost forgotten, it seemed as easy to look forward to the sort of millennium of freedom and brotherhood, which he thought the proper state of mankind, as to the present reign of moderation and improvement. Ill health made him believe that his race would soon be run; that a year or two was all he had of life. He desired that these years should be useful and illustrious. He saw, in a fervent call on his fellow-creatures to share alike the blessings of the creation, to love and serve each other, the noblest work that life and time permitted him. In this spirit he composed Queen Mab.
