This scanner also scans Super 8 frames, which is honestly kind of useful, considering how small and otherwise hard-to-see the images are on a strip. Capture quality is barely passable, unfortunately.
Again, similar stuff going on here. You can tell what's in the picture, but it's hardly an accurate representation of what's on the film: detail is poor, colours are blocky, and anything beyond midtones is RIP.
Colours are basically posterized here, and highlights and shadows are gone.
Here's the same slide scanned with a Nikon Coolscan and the Magnasonic above. Hard to get a sense for the Nikon's much higher resolution here, but the shadow and colour detail on the Magnasonic is abysmal.
People will often ask us about those "slide scanners" they sell on Amazon (like this Magnasonic.) They're an appealing proposition: totally self-contained, one-button operation, JPEGs save to an SD card. Unfortunately, they're a complete waste of time. Samples in thread👇
