The Electrification Action Plan leak has welcomed measures on reducing fossil fuel dependence and scaling up renewable energy, through the uptake of heat pumps, energy storage and smart meters💡 But electrification can be smarter and fairer, our energy policy experts Thomas & Christophe explain how👇
Today, Orcasitas is preparing its next chapter through a collective solar energy project.☀️Orcasitas is one of the inspiring stories featured by #BuildBetterLives, showing how trusted local leadership & community participation can improve homes and reduce energy poverty. 🔍 shorturl.at/L8a7H 4/4🧵
Today, 90 of the neighbourhood's 107 residential blocks have been renovated. The results speak for themselves: 🏡 Average heating bills have fallen by 80%. 🌍 CO2 emissions have been reduced by 58%. 💛 Energy performance has improved from E to C. 3/4🧵👇
The Poblado Dirigido de Orcasitas was built by rural migrants in the 1950s. In 2014, a 600-kilo piece of concrete fell from a building façade. What started with just 6 neighbours grew into assemblies of up to 300 people, building support for a large-scale renovation programme. 2/4 🧵👇
🔥 As heatwaves become more frequent and intense across Europe, better homes are becoming more important than ever. In Spain, the story of the Poblado Dirigido de Orcasitas shows that successful renovation starts long before construction begins. 1/4🧵👇 #BuildBetterLives
Heatwaves are devastating Europe's nature and our daily lives and livelihoods. As the EU Parliament debates the EU's response to heatwaves, the first step should be making fossil fuels pay. How? By commiting to a fossil fuel exit plan and taxing the fossil fuel industry's excess profits✊
🚨The EU needs to quit fossil gas 🚨 With a coalition of over 40 civil society organisations, we are urging the EU for a fossil gas exit strategy, with annual binding gas demand reduction targets of 7-8%, an end to LNG imports, and strong enforcement of the EU methane rules 👉https://l1nq.com/iyvry3r
🌲🌲How can forests support EU goals on climate, health and livelihoods? ➡️The solutions are already there. Now we need to make sure the political will is there too. 🎯Strong enforcement of key EU legislation is key to make our forests more resilient and achieve our climate goals.
Methane from industrial livestock is a major driver of the climate crisis. We are calling on the EU to address livestock methane directly, support farmers in a just transition, and set a robust Paris-aligned methane reduction target. Full letter: changingmarkets.org/wp-content/u...
✅️ The vast majority of European citizens want big polluters to pay for their emissions. 👉️As the Commission prepares to reveal its ETS revision proposal on 15 July, this new data shows widespread public support for the ETS's core principles: 1️⃣ MAKE polluters pay 2️⃣ REWARD industrial decarbonisation.
❌ Most attacks against ETS are coming from those benefiting the most - and who continue to lag behind on their decarbonisation efforts. 🆘 Watering down the ETS now will only reduce the size of the money pot available to support industrial transition and punish the first movers.
‼️ Support for carbon pricing for energy-intensive industries is strong across national & political divides. 📉 People want carbon revenues to be invested in decarbonisation rather than continue free allowances. Any remaining free allowances has to be conditional on investing in real climate action.
19 EU countries have missed the deadline to submit their Social Climate Plans - by ONE YEAR today - 🎂 Unhappy anniversary! This means €85 billion is not being used to improve people's lives. Sign the petition to “Leave fossil fuels behind, not people!”: life-effect.org/petition/

🚨 The European Parliament just passed the EU-US trade deal, marking a capitulation to US pressure and US energy dominance agenda. By deepening its ties with the US, the EU risks locking itself into a new fossil gas dependency, at the moment it needs a clear gas exit strategy. Read our reaction 👇
Bonn side event on addressing Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) towards COP31 noted ISDS as a systemic barrier to fossil fuel phaseout and opportunities to withdraw from ISDS. @globaljusticenow.bsky.social @foeeurope.bsky.social @fossiltreaty.bsky.social Photos © Climate Acceptance Studios
Climate action should not come with threats of million-euro legal claims. At the Bonn climate talks, governments & experts discussed how ISDS system continues to delay & weaken the transition away from fossil fuels. The solution is clear: no new ISDS agreements, and cancelling existing ones.
