Was wondering if it was time to let go of my resentment towards I writer I don't like but some of my friends do and then I just stumbled across this again and remembered how mad the whole town got, and yeah, still don't like him.

And then there he was, on the second floor of Square Books, in a town where writing had become both an industry and the prevailing choice of lifestyle. I had heard that he had been battling cancer, and had both dried out and gotten drunk on Jesus instead, but I had never expected to see a writer famed for his volatility on the page and feared for his nastiness in the symposium become so diminished, so neutered. He was as far gone as a maiden aunt. He was white-haired, and wearing glasses over his slitty, Injun eyes. He was wearing a red-plaid flannel shirt and gray sweat pants, and he looked like Norman Bates's mother, as played by a bewigged Barry Hannah instead of Anthony Perkins. And he wasn't just small — he was homuncular, a scale model of a man in the same way that Oxford is the scale model of a literary center.

At one drink a day, the researchers found, there was an increased risk of premature death from an illness or injury directly attributable to alcohol, though it was small — one in 1,000 people. But the risk of premature death jumped to one in 25 for those who had two drinks a day, a level long considered safe for men, according to the study, which was published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.

Women who had one drink a day were more likely to die of liver cancer or breast cancer than women who did not drink. And at one drink a day, both men and women were at increased risk of dying from liver cirrhosis, oral and esophageal cancers and injuries, the paper found. The risks continued to climb with higher levels of consumption.

Consuming more than one drink per occasion was associated with progressively higher risks of breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and injury.

Literally loose material created from erosion — sand and silt and gravel from once solid rock. It’s an apt word for everything you find as you start digging into the morass this week, feeling inspired to get your shit together. You eroded your life. Time to rebuild.

The industry you worked in for 20 years barely exists.

The “safe” “stable” industry you pivoted to is being replaced by AI.

You still can’t get hired for service work positions.

15. Bankruptcy.

It’s your birthday. You’re kind of old, but you don’t feel like it. You go to your lawyer’s office. You couldn’t make the deadline last week because you kept melting down. But here you are, all your paperwork ready, filing for bankruptcy

4. Does failure look like getting dumped? Maybe.

The Belk gift card is still good. You buy new lingerie, forgetting about your curse: Every time you buy lingerie early in a relationship, you get dumped before you have a chance to wear it.1 It was your first relationship in six years, if you can call six weeks a relationship. One friend says you can’t, but it doesn’t matter. The time spent together was real, and so was the pain. It’s the first time you’ve ever even liked someone you met on an app, which you’ve been trying on and off with depressing results since 2013.
