For Sunday dinner on Independence weekend (as we start to come down from record heat) I did vegetarian all-indoor "cookout." baked beans, German style potato salad, mac and cheese, Samin Nosrat's house dressing. Not pictured because devoured: green salads, crispy roasted maitakes

Baking dishes and pot with leftover beans, potatoes and mac, and a bowl of dressing before I poured it in a jar

The bean pot has two serving spoons in it so people could choose slotted or not. They were kinda soupy

Bad daughter moment: Suddenly when an interviewee mentioned '1926,' I realized my Dad would have turned 100 in January.

Surprise visit at Schmidt's my husband arranged to see Dad in 2017, one of last times I saw him. We're in Columbus and he lived where I grew up in Milwaukee.

Recipe: "ham pie"
Wrap pie dough around a canned ham. Brush w egg. Bake 40 min at 425 degrees. Photo of creation as horrifying as you imagine. The word desiccated comes to mind

You might just have returned from Canada if

Package of ground coffee from Muskoka Roastery Coffee Co. in Ontario. Photo shows the French side (Canadian groceries are bilingual, even the Froot Loops) so it says "L'Appel du Huard, melange du matin." The opposite face says "Loon Call, breakfast blend." Both faces have a black and white detailed drawing of a loon swimming in a forested lake.

All week Taz has been sniffing and barking at his stocking because he remembers treats should be in there. Guess what he noticed this morning. Merry Christmas!

(1) Taz, 20-pound whippet shaped orangey mutt, his tail curled up in hunting mode, standing on a living room chair under front window, where his empty stocking is hanging from the top frame. This is a week before Christmas.

(2) It's now Christmas Day, and the stocking is full of new squeaky balls and salmon treats. Taz stands on same chair, paws on chair back to stretch his nose up. Tail is a wagging blur.

Let's honor our old-timey relatives who were total smoke shows. My Dad, leaning on bat (maybe an axe?), with his brothers.
