Fixed this! Look at my little WIP dude and marvel at how he can see now 🥸 Solution: bsky.app/profile/did:... (Nanite doesn't work with translucent materials; I thought I disabled it, but didn't press Apply Changes)
THIS WAS IT, I unchecked "enable nanite support" but didn't see the tiny button that says "Apply Changes"! (Which, weird, I feel like most other UE stuff doesn't need you to apply anything to ...apply it?) So Nanite was trying to use a translucent material and was messing it up
lol just tried this and it's even more weird but kind of interesting now?
This is all that material is... so not sure why it's being so very weird
A CLUE! Tried again with combining into one mesh, was assigning materials when... wait a minute why is this affecting a material slot it isn't supposed to be in (+ why is it affecting it so strangely??) ...
Alright UE5 folks... help me figure out why this is happening to this poor guy's glasses from a WIP personal project? Looks like second image in Blender. More in thread (pls read + don't assume I haven't done certain things!) -->
welp I thought a panner node would work for blinking for this personal project, but, uh.... in its current state, it Does Not
Oh! Yeah it seems not to say that now, and there’s even a specific bit in the FAQ about this now. Wonder if they got pushback
Been trying out lots of demos during Steam Next Fest and this one stands out - love this art direction (especially the 2D portraits!). Entropy: store.steampowered.com/app/4585480/...
Yesterday I made a pixel art-style radish wall hanging for my kitchen probably? Gotta quilt it up but I thought it turned out cute
I did a lot of work simplifying and "chunkifying"(?) traditional motifs for this, since translating them 1:1 made it too literal + not as readable. Here's an example of a before + after paintover I did to stylize the front gold parts:
And some behind-the-scenes: if anyone’s curious, here’s a texture/UV breakdown! Some elements like the chain, side handles, etc are mirrored and offset in UVs, so they’re only needed once (I offset them 1 or -1 in UV space so they don’t bake on top of each other).
I drew from many sources of inspiration for this piece, blending a stylized sci-fi/fantasy aesthetic with motifs I adapted from historical Armenian decorative arts (I'm part Armenian, and love all decorative arts!) Here’s some of my main sources:
Okay, so: what if you took the decadence of an IP like Warhammer 40k, but looked to ancient Armenia for inspiration? I re-imagined early 80s personal computers as part of an alternate history where they’re used to invoke arcane magic, drawing inspiration from ancient Armenian decorative arts.
🇱🇴🇦🇩🇮🇳🇬 🇲🇴🇴🇳.🇪🇽🇪 ... Welcome to the year 1982, but different! More info in thread about my ancient Armenian computer project. … ꜱᴛᴀʀᴛɪɴɢ ᴜᴘ ꜱᴏʟᴀʀ ꜱʏꜱᴛᴇᴍ ʀᴇᴘʟɪᴄᴀ
Got everything set up in UE5 with some lighting - still got things to tweak on materials (I want more roughness variation in the wood, etc), but she lives! Now … what kind of scene should she live in for the renders? Maybe a desk like someone’s working on it? 🤔
One thing that surprised me was, you make the ring into this shape(ish) before you solder! Then you shape it into a circle after that. (Getting the ends to be perfect 90 degrees to meet up cleanly for solder was probably the hardest part)
I've been taking an intro to jewelry-making class at a local industrial arts space (www.thecrucible.org) and here's the final silver ring I made for class! I always like learning more not-using-screens art forms so this was very cool to do
Working on the stylization art direction for the ceramic designs on the base of the computer 🌺 V1 was more true to reference (ref linked in reply), but felt too spindly and thin. V2 is feeling more more chonky in a way that is very pleasing to me! Next up is working on how it fills out the space.
also it's good to post your WIPs on social media obvs bc then you can see it in thumbnail form, like stepping back from a painting, so you can then add stuff to your to-do list like:
WIP stuff for this 👀 Getting excited with how the basic test materials are looking, got a bunch of bake/UV cleanup to do before I start in earnest though. (She will have All Her Chains and Details in the final one, just testing out stacking UV shells for them)
this is my friend's commentary about this topic on discord, made me actually laugh out loud
Been trying to broaden my game art skills - here's some pixel art portraits I did of characters I designed for a personal project! These were really fun to do.
Also, I think it's helpful to understand textiles if you're going to make 3D versions of them! For example, here's a scarf I made for Peridot a while back - I handmade the knit texture so it'd look like an actual chunky knit scarf, not just like, someone's idea of a generic scarf
Also, fig 2: my vintage brass animal collation. Armadillo is a new addition my partner spotted and I love him!!
