I was behind this couple last week at the Art Institute of Chicago as they framed a small purple-haired figure (from behind) as if it was part of Edward Hopper’s ‘Nighthawks.’ No idea if they put the little doll in other classics but I thought it was cute and funny that they’ll have their own customized visitor to the quiet diner!

Illustrator Norman Rockwell was one of the most popular artists of the 10th century, beloved in particular for the hundreds of cover images he created for the Saturday Evening Post. The Dugout is the largest of several studies for one such cover, published on September 4. 1948. It was inspired by a springtime doubleheader that he attended during which the hometown Boston Braves swept the visiting Chicago Cubs. The artist created an image contrasting dejected Cubs players and elated Braves fans.
Rockwell staged the entire scene, which enabled him to take photographs for later reference. He recruited several family members of Braves players to act as fans. In the dugout, he positioned (from left ro right) Cubs pitcher Bob Rush, manager Charlic Grimm, catcher Al "Rube" Walker, and pitcher Johnny Schmitz. The figure of the forlorn batboy, however, was not a member of the Cubs:
Rockwell paid Braves batboy Frank McNulty $s to don the Cubs uniform and pose.
By the time the issue was published, the Cubs had fallen to last place in their league. Rockwell's cover helped bolster their growing reputation as the "lovcable losers," and it became one of the most recognized sports images of the z0th century.

An arrangement of blue and white tiles in the National Tile Museum in Lisbon depict a lion (clearly done by someone who had never actually seen a lion IRL). He has big, smooth paws with small claws and a shaggy mane that is styled like a human’s hair and beard. He does have a lion-like nose of sorts over a wide grimacing mouth that seems to only have a few bottom teeth. His eyes are human-like, under a furrowed brow and glancing down and to the side as if he’s terribly concerned about whatever is just off to the left.
