Speakers discussed the deep colonial roots of contemporary instances of impunity, such as the genocide in Palestine, the invasion of Ukraine, the penal system, and the subjugation of Indigenous peoples.

Presentations underscored that impunity is a functional feature of colonial legal systems, and has repeatedly worked to protect the status quo and maintain power imbalance.

The report details the tax, trade, debt, and regulatory systems that lock countries into cycles of extraction. To make meaningful change, these systems have to be addressed.

Countries have set targets to halt #deforestation by 2030; actual plans do not reflect this goal. Under current plans, there is a marginal decline in current deforestation, leaving a #ForestGap of 20 million hectares per year.

Most of the land pledged rests with a few large, high-emitting countries. If they fall short on meeting targets, the actual area achieved is considerably smaller. An over-reliance on land-based carbon removal distracts from the necessary goal of a fossil fuel phaseout and ecosystem protection.
