Excited to prepare for an upcoming talk where I'll present one of my dissertation chapters on the invisibility of screws and their makers (in historical scholarship, archives, and museums) Finally giving them the spotlight they deserve ❤️ 🔩🔬 #HistSTM 🗃️ 🏛️ 📜
Closest I'll get to the Caribbean here is the water from the old olympic regatta course not far from my house.
@mqassiti.bsky.social They no longer make the stroop my grandmother always got, so this German/Belgian one will have to do, but it’s still pretty good.
If anyone at the HSS-ESHS conference in Edinburgh wants to hear me talk about an extraordinary nocturnal, I'm presenting (sadly only online): 🗓️ Tuesday, July 14 🗒️ in a panel on "Hands-On Approaches to Instruments" 🕝 at 2:30 to 4:00pm 📍EFI, 2.35 🔗 tinyurl.com/dhhy6ver #HistSTM #MaterialCulture 🗃️
It does indeed :) Strictly speaking what we are looking at are the shoulders (the underside of the head). I’m sure many will say „that’s not a screw“, but my actors would disagree.
Will you just look at this beauty of a sixteenth-century screw head ❤️🔩 #EarlyModern #HistSTM 🗃️🏛️
Several objects from my childhood are currently on display at the Deutsches Museum here in Munich—a walkman & discman, a tamagotchi, a Nintendo gameboy, and a Furby. I have never felt more old. #HistSTM 🗃️
We went to Salzburg with the Deutsches Museum today and I was shocked to learn how few people know the Sound of Music. Am I the only one who grew up with this movie? #ChristopherPlummerAnyone
Finally getting the spotlight they deserve ❤️ 🔩 #EarlyModern #HistSci #HistSTM 🗃️
It is definitely partially the result of wear and tear, but some of it may also stem from the nature of manufacturing (i.e. tools used). I still have to do more research on that though. The shape of the head from this angle reminded me of this one (if you know it):
And for those of you who are curious about the size of these screws, here’s a picture with a 2-euro coin for reference and scale. We’re talking millimeters here!
To the historians still claiming that the drives of #EarlyModern screws were not centered: the maker of these 16th century screws would like to have a word! #HistSTM 🔩🗃️🕰️
Getting up close and personal ❤️ #HistSci #HistTech #HistSTM #EarlyModern 🗃️🔩 🕰️
Une amie à moi m’a apporté ça de France. Je ne suis pas sûr de vouloir essayer.
Who needs tweezers and gloves to pick up and handle an #EarlyModern screw, when you’ve got ferromagnetism! 🔩 I love metal! 🤍 #HistSci #HistTech 🕰️🗃️
Spending my day with this beauty ❤️ #HistSci #HistSTM #EarlyModern 🗃️
The proof is in the pudding, but at least it came out of the oven in one piece.
Since it was my birthday last week, I am making my colleagues at the Deutsches Museum a treat from my region: "Limburgse Kersenvlaai" 🥧 🍒. Please pray for me that it works! The last time I've made this was well over ten years ago (though my colleagues at the MPI didn't complain).
It's my birthday today & as I slowly approach 40, I'm strangely nostalgic for my time in elementary school....no cellphones, no internet, or other digital tools to remind us of each other's birthdays. Memory and analog calendars were our tools & I still remember the birthdays of my classmates.
Puffed & slashed textile garments were then seen as the epitome of luxury & status (not my claim). Armor from this period also frequently comprised elements inspired by fashionable clothes, including "sabatons" (foot armor)—some of which resemble the "slippers" you mention.
Just your average Sunday in Munich, when a Zeppelin flies over your head during your morning run! #HistTech 🚀
After years of searching, and frustratingly relying on phone pics and partial scans, I finally got my own copy….for only €25! ❤️
Tomorrow! I'm nervous about the German Q&A portion of the talk, but excited to be able to get feedback from experts in the field! ❤️ 🔩 #HistSci #HistTech #HistSTM #EarlyModern #MaterialCulture 🗃️ 🏛️
