Powell Street Festival is celebrating its 50th anniversary. We spent the afternoon there, saw some friends, ate some food, listened to some drumming, and painted some fish (https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/gyotaku-japanese-fish-printing)
Mother and daughter worked together this morning 👩🏻👧🏻 to make snacks for daughter’s school potluck today. Looking forward to pics of all the other food! 🥘 🍱🍲
Today on my walk under the wild green trees and amber setting sun I started listening to The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman 📚
Woke up to the earthquake news in Kumamoto. I remember the last big one that hit the mainland in Kumamoto. 😬

After the Goodbot.ca summer BBQ took a selfie with the big World Cup Ball before they take it down. Lovely hot evening in Vancouver tonight. https://micro.chadkohalyk.com/2026/07/22/after-the-goodbotca-summer-bbq.html
On the weekend I drove to my hometown deep in the Rockies for a 30 years grad reunion. It has been 10 years since I have been back. Realized how I took these stupendous mountains for granted.
I’m in my hometown in the Rockies for the first time in 10 years. We had our 30th High School Reunion. So good to catch up with old friends.

森林浴 Forest Bathing This is in Redwood Park, near the Fairie Forest in South Surrey, just a few blocks from the US border.
Read Play Unsafe How Improvisation Can Change the Way You Roleplay by Graham Walmsley 📚 A bunch of us DMs read this together for discussion. It’s nice a short and gives everyone solid situations to talk about, rather than dredging up and criticizing specific elements of one another’s game.
We’ve been blessed by lovely weather yesterday and today. Third Beach at Stanley Park https://micro.chadkohalyk.com/2026/07/06/weve-been-blessed-by-lovely.html
About to watch some fireworks at the White Rock Pier. Happy Canada Day 🇨🇦
Finished Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro 📚 Took me a bit to get into, but Ishiguro is a master of emotional reflection and also slowly building up the tension. Great book club book, rich with conundrums to talk through! Go in knowing nothing.

It’s 10am on a Monday morning so me and my whole family are at the Fan Zone to watch the Japan Brazil match ⚽️ #wc2026
If you are in #SurreyBC or Langley there is a group putting together an emergency supplies trip to Venezuela to support earthquake victims. (There is a collection point in Surrey at a private home. DM me for details.)
Drove up to Whannock Lake, famous (?) for humpback salmon. Went to a bunch of farmers markets. Got some veg, smoked salmon and wild salmon fillet which I baked once we got home for a fresh summer dinner!
Happy Father’s Day. 👔 It’s also the 5th anniversary of my father passing due to lung cancer. 5 years! Really wish he was here to see our home, the life we built, and his grandchildren grow up. I held his hand while he died. Driving home I stopped to take this photo of the sky. Love you Dad! 🙏
Started One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad 📚 This has been on my list forever and I finally got a copy. Very late I know, but I expect it to live up to the hype. Will need to find some good breakdowns and comparisons later. Share if you know some worth reading!

Wife came home after 6 days in the interior at a conference and visiting friends and family. We went for a lunch date at a Korean Chinese place and have been talking for hours as we catch one another up. 6 days is long, especially for the one left behind 💞
