It's always a little shocking but cool to have skeletons who want to hang out with you

The cover of what I assume is an old Goosebumps book with skeletons riding a roller coaster one way reaching out to live people riding the roller coaster the other way. The skeletons are labeled "Skeletons who want to be friends with me" and the other side is labeled "Me, surprised, but excited to be friends with skeletons", because who wouldn't be?

Well it’s a hazy hell out here but I saw a shy friend. The Eastern Kingsnake is a non venomous and, as my coworker says, fairly docile species of snake. They’re immune to the venom of many other species and frequently predate on other snake species. Keep up the good work buddy.

A black snake with whispy white stripes inside of a large concrete pipe. The pipe, for reference, is 6 feet tall. The snake seems to be an Eastern Kingsnake.

A bitty ribbit, a cute hoot, and a tolerant turt. Not pictured: the big black cows I saw at a distance and mistook for bears at first glance. In my defense you don’t normally see cows in the woods.

An itty bitty frog, smaller than a fingernail, on the windshield of a large work truck.

What I believe is an eastern screech owl with its back turned but its head swiveled around to look toward the camera somewhat. It was real hard to get a good picture with a phone case with fucked up glass covering the lenses that deal with zoom ins.

An unhappy box turtle tolerating my presence after I tapped its back leg with a stick just to make sure it wasn’t injured - in my defense it looked weird and flat but it pulled it into the shell without issue. I think it might’ve been overseeing a nest, so I hope I didn’t disturb it too much.

Anyway here’s a cool lizard I saw today. According to the Virginia Herpetological Society’s site (really cool resource for identifying lizards snakes and turtles and such) it’s an eastern fence lizard? It was about the size of my hand. Biggest I’ve ever seen in the wild.

A rough-scaled lizard, roughly 4 inches main body, maybe 7 nose to tail? It’s looking over its shoulder at the camera as it sits on an old log.

I forgot to share this when I took it earlier, but nature is really fucking cool sometimes you guys. This one’s like an optical illusion. I explained it in the alt text but see if you can figure out what’s weird about this picture first!

A normal looking forest shot until you examine it closer. One of the trees that looks like it’s growing behind a fallen log is actually growing up out of it - there’s a gap below the log showing that there’s nothing under it. Looking to the left you see the bottom of the main tree still partially in the ground, displaying an admirable stubbornness in the face of crisis.

Very tempting but after all that effort my family put into getting a 2XL to work again we’ll stick with my nasally robot brother.

A 2-XL “robot” toy cassette player, which was novel for its special cassette tapes which had points where you could change tracks, used for either quiz tapes narrated by 2-XL himself (riddled with hacky jokes that any self respecting child loved) or choose your own type adventures, notably ones with Batman or Superman. It also worked as just a regular tape player. Since it didn’t have a creepy moving face it isn’t as well remembered as teddy ruckspin.

It can be used for comedic effect too, it's a very fun stylistic choice.

Two panels, one of a woman making a shocked face, with the face of a primate (baboon? monkey?) behind her - it may be more representative of her emotion than actually present. The second panel is a further closeup with an even more detailed expression of shock and urgency on her face and that of the monkey. It seemingly conveys the initial shock of something happening, then the sudden realization of much worse implications.

I don't know where this image originated, unfortunately. Sorry.

This series of posts isn't related to the other thing people are talking about and I explicitly don't want to discuss that here, for the record. This is just something I thought was a cute thing to think about.

Two 4koma comics (read right to left and down - start from the top right and go down). The first is titled Person.

The first panel has Samus with her helmet off, smiling sweetly at Kirby. I mean, who wouldn't? He's fucking adorable. She thanks Kirby for defeating the Metroid, and Kirby thinks to himself how she's a human, like Adeline. The second panel shows comparisons between Adeline's hands, face, and legs, with Kirby's thoughts commenting "But... they're so different!" The third panel shows Adeline the artist responding "That's just the difference between an adult and a child!" Kirby responds "Oh, really?" The final panel shows Adeline showing off a drawing and saying "This is what I'll look like in the future!" and it's just her stretched upward like a stick person. Kirby blanches and thinks "No, they're definitely different!"

The second comic starts with King Dedede saying Adeline is really good at art. She asks "really?" Second panel shows Dedede pointing to a picture of a blob with five protrusions. "Yeah, this is a really good banana!" he says. She responds "It's an octopus." Third panel he's laughing and says "It's an octopus that's cute like a banana is!" Adeline smiles and responds "I knew that you would understand, Dedede!" Fourth panel is a close up on Dedede thinking "It's a lie, but I won't say that".

Source of comic I don't know, but I think it's official?

Now it's mostly just all vibes, sure, but I've always considered Kirby and Metroid connected ever since Kirby's Dreamland 3 where Samus cameos. Uh, spoilers for anyone who didn't know. There's a bunch o cameos but that's the one I recognized. I think lots were obscure Japanese games.

Okay, so I responded to some pro-AI goober about why AI "artwork" holds no substantive creative value, and he responded by blocking me. I spent last night typing up a long detailed essay-post and by blocking me he made it all invisible to anyone else. Except for me! So for media preservation:

To whom it may concern:

Pen and pencil production infrastructure already exists. It has no new impact on energy prices as they are already accounted for by power systems. Also, these industries are regulated. AI data centers are new, and would either add heavy loads on existing infrastructure

or be allowed to create their own power systems absent the relevant regulation, which could also have severe ecological implications if they're building their own coal plants beneath their sites. Also, it's worth noting that data centers already exist that allow the internet to function.

General internet usage is dwarfed by AI needs with regards to data centers, and this means that as AI requires more from data centers, it will cause internet processing to suffer, and costs to soar. We're already seeing some sites being priced out of the market.

Surely a shrinking and more expensive internet is a negative for creativity. This is all to say nothing of the impact of dependency developed by young people who use it without learning how to do things themselves, which isn't even touching on how they're being driven to suicide by it.

But your point is about how AI is a tool. I could hire a man to paint something that I told him to paint and consider him a tool, and yet the only tool in the room would be me. I would have no standing to then claim the work as mine and sell it.

Especially not if it's as poor as your examples.

Scrutinizing any random part of your example images reveals blurred and blending lines, like some manner of fever dream of whatever was intended. These generative models draw from existing works, often without permission, because they hold no inherent talent. Thus errors like this are common.

If we consider a hypothetical future where AI is common, they will inevitably start drawing from other AI images & you will see such errors increase as the process becomes more incestuous. And, since so much of the argument of these things seems to be to edge real artists out of the market...

There will eventually be fewer artists producing meaningful works of art because it will simply become financially unfeasible. This is an argument I frequently hear, as if artists are arrogant elites who need to be taken down a peg. This is short-sighted and wrong.

AI "art" is doomed to become an Oroboros, a snake eating its own tail until it consumes itself and excrement is all that remains. Again, generative AI requires input for output. It doesn't create art from nothing. It is a blight on the planet, a cancer on the economy, and a poison to creativity.

And this was the first one I mostly finalized, the Galapagos Galaxy HV76. It's a little awkward but it's been reliable so far. I just felt like trying new stuff. I do like this one's landing gear though, since they flip up into thrusters when it's flying.

It also has thrusters on the back that appear to swing down into legs in a landing position, in conjunction with the ski-like leg on the front.

The most recent one I tried building was this one, the Heavy Lobster AV5.

A dark red ship from the top-side, in space, with lots of glowing red lines and sharp angular edges. It has two large sharp turbine-ish things on either side that give it the name, due to the vague resemblance to lobster claws.

In a desperate attempt to extricate myself from a doomscrolling spiral let me make good on my promise to share my space RVs. The one I've been trying to make my main ship is the EX20 Owl of the Radical Empathy.

The previous ship shown docked from the side, showing that there is a bottom level that stretches for 3/4ths the length, a mid-level that stretches the full length and comprises the bulk of the ship, and two separate top levels - one just behind the cockpit and another at the rear of the ship. There's an entry ramp at the front and a drop-down platform entrance in the midship underside.
