This is all so absurd and depressing. I've spent my entire career dealing with large datasets of personally-identifiable information and data points on millions of people. In a competent environment, no one just gets access to that data after a week on the job. You go through background checks, approval processes, and even then you will likely only get access to a subset of data that excludes PII, because most use cases, like flagging potential fraud or demographic analysis or ML modeling, doesn't need you to know that stuff, and even if you do, you will then pass your analysis on to other people who are specifically further approved to access that data because they are *legally responsible* for it, as in they can get sent to big-person jail if they fark up. In the few cases I can recall where I was accidentally exposed to cleartext names, SSNs, etc., we had SOPs in place for dealing with it, which was usually immediately shut down everything, contact IT or infosec, and any unauthorized physical media that came into contact with the data would be hard-wiped and probably dropped in an industrial shredder. We didn't joke around. Unfortunately these processes were necessary because you occasionally ran across environments like what it seems these DOGE kiddies are operating in where they just don't have the same standards. I really hope the reporting on this is being exaggerated or misinterpreted......

So it sounds like at least one of the kiddies had remote production server access through SSH and local root access on those servers. Which if true is completely nuts. Straight to jail for the kiddie(s) and whoever granted that level of access. There should be remotely-archived access logs and permission elevation logs that could be used to verify whether or not this happened. Haha, this reminds me of an incident I went through a long time ago where IT claimed I'd gained access to a prod server hosted in our DMZ and that I'd used that to get root and modify the routing table to siphon off customer data, which was also nuts, except in that case I knew it was nuts and the log archives proved my innocence, whereas in this case I'm not so sure. So farking disappointing.

Waste management is only going to charge me $30.71/month for the same service Republic was charging me $189.79/month. I have been paying them 6x what their competition is charging. They're also going to charge me about twice the cost to pick up my old containers as WM charges to deliver new ones.

Republic Services sucks. I hadn't been paying close attention to it, and I didn't really have a feel for what I should be paying for trash service. Their bill kept creeping up so I finally checked with another company.

Invoice from Republic Services: $569.38 for three months trash pick up service for one 96 gallon trash bin and one 96 gallon recycling bin.
