A few slices of garlic, oregano, and lemon verbena are in the dehydrator this morning
We did see some fun birds - swifts or swallows eating bugs, Canada geese, wood ducks, kingfishers, and this great blue heron!
There were some very choppy parts of the river almost to the point of white caps. That's husband on his recumbent fishing kayak.
We went into the Genesee River, which flows south to north to empty into Lake Ontario. So I decided to go north (with the current) because that meant going against the wind. This area is mostly light industrial and residential so there isn't a lot of wildlife.
Ok, so we have a few favorite spots for us to put in our kayaks, this one has accessible kayak and canoe launches! With me gaining so much upper body strength, moving my kayak around has been so much easier but these launches are the best.
My remote day morning gardening is complete - I cleaned up the herb garden and tried to clear the plants attempting to take over the walkway.
I measure a couple of ounces into freezer paper and then freeze them until we're ready to use them - or give them to other people
This next part is very "measure with your heart". I started with 1.5c of butter for all of those scapes and then put in another .5c. I could add more - you could add more. It's up to you and how you like your butter. I use the paddle attachment, but you could use the whisk, too.
It seems like bsky is struggling with images today but I'll keep posting them for viewing later... Next up is getting them very small. I pulse them in my ninja blender, use whatever tool you have - don't over think this.
I sautee the scapes in olive oil with a bit of salt until bright green, fragrant, and slightly softened.
And then you trim them - the lighter, woodier portion of the bottom of the stem and the bud at the end. I also chop them into shorter portions for easier cooking
Ok, so first you drop them on the garage floor - wait, no - ok, first you wash them. I use a veg wash made up of 1/4c white vinegar and 3/4c water
I grabbed some of the glass jars from the basement collection to put over the cucumbers. This will give them tiny greenhouses and protection from whatever is eating them.
Tonight I'm making chicken bacon ranch wraps, here's the cutting board to prep the wraps
I saw these garden skeletons and immediately thought of @erinleeryan.bsky.social
We went to Boldt Castle and it was stunning! They've done a ton of restoration work since 1990 - this used to be a spot tourists would come to "visit" and deface.
Would you like some photos from my weekend in the thousand Islands (the northern portion of NYS)? Here's a Common Morganser
I googled this flower that the bees really seem to like and which thrives in the front garden (not much else has lived here). Maybe I'll get another one for here - I put in bunches of impatiens in this bed to try to stabilize it while new native plants try to take hold.
Ok all 23 seed potatoes are in the ground. I think, finally, all of the annuals are planted. Here is the marigold border to the herb garden. 🌱
