Chloe Mashiter
@chloemashiter
game-designer / performer / creative technician. Agender (they/he/she). Sometime organiser of community funding dinners
Powerpoint Partied this weekend and damn straight I'm proud of my contribution (feels like these 4 pics capture enough of it) And if anyone doubts me I will die on the hill of Santa is an ARG
Life news! After 3 years of flight controlling, science-lore-wrangling, coding, teleporting and suchlike, I'm leaving my position as a Creative Associate at Bridge Command in October. I'll still be freelance, but I'm getting back to freelance life wholesale - so will be hunting for work soon!
Count The Rice (Game Changer's latest episode) made me wildly excited from an interactive-immersive experience design perspective: so here's a list of Game Changer episodes that are great references for various design principles: chloemashitermakesthings.wordpress.com/wp-content/u...
Lastly: Hidden Within Walls, a map-making game where you balance the demands of being a Byrgenweard and a Raederwine (yeah I had fun exploring middle English language for this one!), drawing overlapping maps to serve both the city and the inhabitants' aims and stories...
Next up: Fox & Redwing, which begins with a fictional folktale your character knows well....build a world, then origami your notes as your character bends and shifts reality, with pieces of the world lost in the folds, merged in the joins. (Never tried origami? Great way to start!)
First up: Bear! I'll admit to still loving the core conceit, even years on: *you* are the otherworldly patron of an adventurer, with your body/surroundings signalling how they're doing, and what help they might need. (ngl, it started as an experiment in making myself slow the hell down!)
My second sale on itch (until July 6th) is the Folklore & Fiction sale - three solo games all ultimately about telling stories to shape the world. Connect to another world by listening to the one around you, alter reality by doing origami, enable rebellion via mapmaking... itch.io/s/192043/fol...
I've got two sales happening on itch for the next two weeks! First up: SHLOCK SALE - my most over-the-top games inspired by B-movies, trashy TV, melodramatic premises and general chaotic fun Each game's 25% off - but buy as a bundle and they're 1/3 off! itch.io/s/192035/sch...
A handful of pics from @efimeralevents.bsky.social's game Aretuza (taken by the brilliant Mauro Lopez del Fresno), such beaut reminders of a game I had an absolute ball playing (and lovely to be confident that I definitely want to play more eps in future!)
heading into Gothenburg having just landed, getting myself ready for Knutpunkt! Already delighted by the chilly air, rigged landscape, looming grey clouds (no, really. my body is *in it's element*) Can't wait to be surrounded by wonderful people and amazing ideas for three days!
Due to a few dropouts, there's 4 spots available for the Immersive Makers Jam next Monday! Come for a day of collaborating, making and socialising (and it's free!) Book your spot here: ticketpass.org/event/ENGMTG...
Immersive Makers Jam: a day-long free event on Mon 23rd Feb in London Next month I'll be running (with the brilliant Gryph Griffin) an immersive makers jam - a low-pressure space to try things out, learn from others, and meet collaborators! More info/bookings here: ticketpass.org/event/ENGMTG...
Heading to UKGE this morning! I'm only going for today, so if you're about gimme a shout so I can come say hi! Will be masked so look out for the multicoloured hair and big glasses
Needed to get stills of some old work this morning, and damn if I don't still have so much love in my heart for this livestreamed panto. The absurdly scrappy visuals, the goose chases in chat, the joyful silliness that was committed to fun over polish...miss you Jack & The Beanstalk
The printed in-world posters for Support Group For The Newly Human arrived! Suddenly realising how big A2 is... And Voidspace Live is *only two weeks away!* Get tix and come pretend to be an ex-zombie (or -vampire, or -werewolf, or -ghost) with me! voidspacezine.com/event/voidsp...
*damn* Brixton's permanent blood donation centre feels swanky - as ever, if there's anyone out there able to donate but nervous about doing so I'm happy to accompany anyone (w/in London!) to a donation
Every festival/conference/convention should have a Flash Talks segment. I swear I have never been disappointed by a solid hour or so of 5-10 minute special-interest talks. (though Sam @amazefest.bsky.social's Hyper Talks might be the best hosted/run instance I've ever seen)
Another museum wish: more dressing up sections please (went to the German Spy Museum today; did also enjoy dressing up at Wonderkamers in The Hague a few weeks back)
This may not look like much, but it's the first steps of me making assets as I finally tell myself I *am* going to learn Unity, because I really really do want to make a game that a) is presented as an in-world computer screen (minimising distance between what player + player character are doing)...
Next: what you're actually doing. You move through a bleak, aggressive landscape. Any path a prior figure has taken, thorns are flattened and easier to walk. But inevitably you reach areas (or veer outside slim paths) and are caught by - impaled by - the thorns. You go until you can't anymore.
Right, there's a game I haven't been able to get out of my head since late March so I wanna chat about it Let me tell you about AGGREGATE
1 month until Support Group for the Newly Human at Voidspace! So I'm announcing the companion game: 'A coffee with Finn, who used to be a ghost, or vampire, or something.' Made for anyone who can't make it in person, this two-part text-based game casts you as a newly human person seeking support.
Love this as I currently look into my tickets/plans for the coming week.
*runs in during the final hour* happy trans visibility day. Visibility is a tricky thing for me at times: I wish I was more visually confusing to people (so they didn't default to assuming I'm a woman) but also I don't owe anyone shit physically to validate my agender-ness. I often feel invisible...
Goddamn the Shadows exhibition at MUNCH in Oslo feels very damn special - will share much more soon but what wonderful creativity, theatrics, surprises, use of tech and general beauty. (little pic of where Munch paints your portrait, w buttons on the chairs arms for English or Norwegian)
goddamn, thank god I've got a week and a half in Stockholm after Knutepunkt because I'll need that to even *start* thinking about everything I've heard/seen/watched/listened to/chatted about these last few days (for now: Puerto Banana is my new fave tabletop game)
Made an in-world tarot deck whilst playing Krystalium this week - all inspired by moments in game, used by my character to divine feelings about upcoming missions etc. Really like it as a way of documenting a game!
Went through my Krystalium characters 'words' this evening (since, I basically have everything she 'said' written down) - love the variety of messages on 1st page, and the handwriting that varies with tone of message, and I think 2nd page is only written 'conversation' that happened
Been quiet online because I've been larping at Krystalium the last few days! Been silent irl because the universe is hilarious and I *entirely* lost my voice right before the game. Which...definitely gave some interesting insights for research into game and experience design! Writing up soon
Just 'rehearsed' Support Group for the Newly Human (spoke to imaginary people whilst pacing my room...) and *so excited* for tonight! This strange, gentle, emotional, silly show-slash-game combines so much I love, can't wait to see what people do with it! (Also: it packs down *this small"?!)
