She’d been a fool. On the live feed, the Gry was still an impassive hunk of dead metal. But now Revera imagined any number of automated systems inside the derelict booting up and turning their attention to the new interloper. How many ways could it threaten the Tizona without exhibiting any external signs? Too many, probably. And with the Tizona drifting less than a kilometer from the hull, they were easy targets. A single turret could rip dozens of holes in the ship’s hull in seconds. That hadn’t happened yet, but the danger was far from over. She’d lulled herself into complacency by thinking the ship was dead.

The ledge fell off on both sides. The aft portion of the ship wasn’t altogether missing, but a good chunk of it had blown out, leaving a drop into infinity two steps in front of her. Off to the right, where once had been a large section of the engineering deck was a chaotic tangle of sheared metal plating, pipes, wiring, insulation and all the other pieces of a battleship normally kept hidden away between the bulkheads and hull. Off to the left and below her was the endless gulf of stars. A dark curve cut through the expanse, the remnant of one of the Gry Servellion’s massive drive cones. Across the jagged bridge over the abyss was a room... or half of one, open to the outside.
