Drawing on Michael Saward, we argue that in an interactive-constructivist understanding of representation as a two-way relationship, citizens' evaluation of politicians' communicative acts is central to assessing representation's quality, for its reveals representation's democratic legitimacy. 7/17

In section 3, we first discuss the notion of representation as a communicative (speech or non-speech) act using examples - incl. a famous campaign line of Joe Biden & an image of Jacinda Ardern's visit of the Muslim community at Christchurch. We also consider citizens' evaluations of such acts. 6/17

Instead, we argue for an "interactive-constructivist" ontology in which representation is constituted through communicative acts (claim-making by politicians & citizens' reactions) & institutions are neither necessary nor sufficient for representation but provide a background for the practice. 5/17

What other aspects of representation deserve our focus (beyond substantive & descriptive)? To start, we provide a definition of representation👇 focusing on politicians' communicative acts & their evaluations by citizens. It conceives representation relationally & decouples it from elections. 3/17

In the introduction, we argue that the crisis of representation proclaimed by many political scientists is not *replicated* in how citizens in democracies evaluate their relationship with politicians. Trust in politicians & perceptions of promissory representation are not in general decline. 1/17
