At about 5 p.m. the National Weather Service warned of a severe thunderstorm that could pack winds as high as 60 mph.
According to the Tallahassee City Utilities' outage map, almost 5,500 customers were out of power in 64 separate outages.
"Severe weather has impacted the electric system, with reports of broken poles," the city wrote on social media.
"Currently, service outages impacting roughly 5,000 customers, mostly on east & northeast sides of town. Crews actively working on repairs & restoration."
A National Weather Service meteorologist in Tallahassee, Kristian Oliver, said the highest recorded wind gust came out of the Tallahassee International Airport with a 43 mph gust, but he expects higher recordings as they come in from northeast Tallahassee.
He described the storm as a downburst.
"It was a really strong rush of wind from the storm environment to the surface," he said, noting he observed a lot of tree damage and downed powerlines as he drove down Thomasville Road to the office at Florida State
University.

Absolutely one of the best investments we’ve made for our cats. Solves so many issues. Our senior cats have special diets and medications. These feeders insure everyone only eats their prescribed foods and helps us monitor how much they are eating.

I had to do some digging, but I’m pretty sure these are his dogs. A boxer and a pug. And this comment from a neighbor gives some good insights. It’s a pretty extensive and densely wooded area that they’ve got to search.

This happened about 11 years ago with the same child. My neighbors and I found him deep in the back woods of my property on Moulton Hill rd. He is nonverbal from what i recall, and when we found him he was scared and his fear response was hiding in the woods/ trees. This same scenario could still apply.
Neighbors please check your properties well and don't assume he's just gonna call out or pop up if you yell for him. Prayers for a speedy rescue

The Snyder Mesa Fire west of Fruita/Grand Junction along the Utah/CO border merged with the Knowles and Jones Fires yesterday. Three firefighters were killed and two injured yesterday before crews were pulled back to staging areas for their safety. Last estimated at 28k acres. 0% contained.

When a devastating earthquake hit Haiti in 2010, a teenager named John Peter was playing basketball in the yard outside the small orphanage where he lived. He felt the earth bounce below him. He heard screams and watched a mushroom cloud of dust rising over the walls.
Two weeks later, he and 18 other children from the orphanage boarded a charter plane in the middle of the night as part of an American humanitarian effort. They landed in Sanford, Fla., to start new lives, in a new country, with new families.
"I saw the disaster and death all around. Dead moms, holding their dead kids," John Peter Schlecht, now 23 and known as "JP," said from St. Cloud, Minn., where he works three jobs. "I got out of there, but all those people were left.
They didn't get the chance I got."
Since then, the children have headed in all directions. Some are studying in high school or college, or making a living of their own. Others have struggled with problems brought on by the early hardship in their lives, profound culture shock and the inability of their new parents to handle the challenges. Some were institutionalized or sent into foster care.
And in perhaps the most unlikely development, one boy and his older adopted Haitian sister ended up in the Rose Garden last month, introduced to the world by President Trump as two of Judge Amy Coney Barrett's seven children.
"She opened her home and her heart, and adopted two beautiful children from Haiti," he said, introducing Judge Barrett as his nominee to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court.

Abstract
The Boconó fault is a strike-slip fault lying between the North Andean Block and the South American plate which has triggered at least five Mw > 7 historical earthquakes in Venezuela. The North Andean Block is currently moving toward NNE with respect to a stable South American plate. This relative displacement at ~ 12 mm yr 1 in Venezuela (within the Maracaibo Block) was measured by geodesy, but until now the distribution and rates of Quaternary deformation have remained partially unclear. We used two alluvial fans offset by the Boconó fault (Yaracuy Valley) to quantify slip rates, by combining 1°Be cosmogenic dating with measurements of tectonic displacements on high-resolution satellite images (Pleiades). Based upon a fan dated at >79 ka and offset by 1350-1580 m and a second fan dated at 120-273 ka and offset by 1236-1500 m, we obtained two Pleistocene rates of 5.0-11.2 and <20.0 mm yr 1, consistent with the regional geodesy. This indicates that the Boconó fault in the Yaracuy Valley accommodates 40 to 100% of the deformation between the South American plate and the Maracaibo Block. As no aseismic deformation was shown by interferometric synthetic aperture radar analysis, we assume that the fault is locked since the 1812 event. This implies that there is a slip deficit in the Yaracuy Valley since the last earthquake ranging from ~1 to 4 m, corresponding to a Mw 7-7.6 earthquake. This magnitude is comparable to the 1812 earthquake and to other historical events along the Boconó fault.

Rainy had a rather arduous vet visit yesterday with a wonderful new vet to address a chronic respiratory issue. Despite annihilating several tubes of Churu, she is very glad that’s over and done with. Currently snuggled up and sleeping peacefully on her favorite blanket. #Caturday

Rainy, a DSH gray kitty, is looking almost rustic under the “relaxing sunset” dimmed lighting I’ve got turned on in the bedroom. She’s curled up fast asleep on a haphazardly arranged heap of forest-green fleece blanket.
