Just watched Merrily We Roll Along (now on Netflix), a musical about friendships & how they change over time. I'm not big on movies that are musicals, but when the movie is the stage production recorded in front of an audience, I think it changes the entire vibe for the better. Highly recommend.

On Friday, Mar 13th, I lost Trojan. He was my north star, teaching me patience, compassion, and unconditional love. The only silver lining is that he went from completely healthy and happy to critically ill very quickly, so he didn't suffer long. See you in the next life, My Brother Become.

A Black person, Ash, lies in their bed, looking at their phone. Two pundits are talking to each other. The man says, "About damn time. There are only two genders!" The woman says, "Right, Jeff. Kids shouldn't hear about this stuff. It'll only confuse them." Ash rolls over in their bed and sighs. A white person is getting dressed in professional clothing, trying to tie their tie in the mirror. They're listening to the news on their phone, which is saying, "Alabama governor Kay Ivey has now signed into law two bills, one of which bans the discussion in schools of sexual orientation and gender identity deemed 'not age appropriate.'" Their husband, a Black man with glasses, approaches them and says, "Babe, you okay?" They respond, "Not really." Their husband helps them fix their tie, saying, "Here. Let me."

Ash is getting ready in front of the mirror wearing a sports bra. They turn to the side and push in their breasts to see what it would look like with a man's chest. They throw on a baggy shirt. The gay couple is listening to the news in their living room. The TV says, "The other bill punishes doctors to ten years in prison if they provide hormones or puberty blockers to trans youth." The white person leans down and kisses the Black person, who is sitting on the couch, on the cheek. The Black person says, "Is today the day?" The white person responds, "If I can be strong enough."

Ash's parents are in the background watching TV while Ash eats cereal in the foreground. The TV says, "I believe very strongly that if the good Lord made you a boy, then you are a boy, and if He made you a girl, then you are a girl." Ash's dad responds, "Good for her. About time someone stood up to this woke nonsense." Ash leaves for school. Their dad says, "Hey, have a good day, Ashley." Under their breath, Ash responds, "It's Ash." Now at school, Ash is walking down the hallway. They pass another student, who says, "*cough* D*ke *cough*." The white person sits in their car, gripping their steering wheel. Crying, they reach into their glove compartment. They pin a trans flag button to their collar.

The caption says, "When we feel the world is out to get us..." The white person walks into the classroom and says, "Good morning, class." They lay their bag on the desk. The caption says, "Our voices muted, the air stolen from our very lungs..." The class responds, "Good morning, Mr. Carpenter."
