realtime logging is a feature that I don't see out-of-the-box in many engines but that I find extremely essential for debugging. it's been fun this time around to take advantage of Ruby to make it super extensible so I can render arbitrary widgets instead of just text.

I've closed the off-ramp from the I84 west to holladay and marked the circular alternative route to the movie theater parking lot: I84 to I5 north to weidler to 15th to multnomah, labeled "It's slower but you'll deal".

I've put a modal filter on Multnomah and 9th, meaning no cars pass through this intersection, only bicycles. This preserves local access while drastically reducing the strain on this street. (You'd need exceptions for the busses to get through but this is doable).

Finally, I've labeled how the red+green+blue lines cut straight through this area with "take the MAX if u want to get to ur movie on time :)". The transit access is so great that we can afford to cut back our street access!!

$through these solo runs, i learn how to bend time. i learn that being a good runner means experiencing everything a fraction of a second before anyone else. it means tapping into the schizophrenic logic you'd normally want to keep at bay, entertaining every doubt and delusion that sidles through the backdoor of your head. in order to fully inhabit tau ceti, you need to reciprocate: you have to let it inhabit you. you have to grant it easy access to your amygdala, the permission to stimulate fear before the violence has a chance to take place. recklessly indulgent pattern recognition. frolicking through meadows of noise. harmony in a broken world. stalker shit.$

during pauses in the action, i want to ask sparrow about otherside picnic. i've told her half of the truth, which is that "otherside picnic saved my life." but we aren't close yet, so i've avoided telling her the whole truth—"last year, i sort of lost my mind, and then otherside picnic saved my life"—out of fear of appearing like i'm trauma-dumping. i'd like to think i'm learning from past mistakes, even outside of tau ceti.

so instead, one night, as we stare at the loading screen, i volunteer: "how far did you get into otherside picnic?"

"Dead-ending of Lateral Streets": streets that used to connect to a main transit passage are turned into dead ends (with a circular cut-out to allow for u-turns), while still allowing bikes/pedestrians to move freely.

Many Americans would blanch in horror at the thought of a bar or a restaurant or even a shop next to their suburban house. In fact, many Japanese people would feel the same! But in Japan, there are ways for neighborhoods to come together with local businesses and make sure that the character of the neighborhood is preserved. McReynolds writes:

In Tokyo, a disruptive bar next door would also be unwelcome. However, a degree of legal ambiguity is present, which drives neighbors to negotiate a mutually tolerable consensus regarding in-home businesses. I have no real ill will towards bluesky but it's worth saying that "mastodon.social is being DDOS'd, so much for your ~true~ decentralization" fails to land when, in cases like this, 75% of the fediverse remains operational, vs. -1.4%- of bluesky. mastodon.social and bsky.app are not comparable.

I made a program that generates a 7x7 grid and deletes 7 nodes from it at random as a first pass for testing some graph-based game design ideas and it's honestly fascinating how this simple algo makes such evocative layouts. I feel like these could be FPS maps or something.

even better: what if we rezoned Cesar Chavez??? Why is this Stroad residential-zoned? It keeps killing people and we HAVE to do something about that. We could narrow to two lanes or add bike lanes! and build the whole thing out as a new commercial corridor. Kills like three birds with one stone!

4 lanes of Cesar Chavez. This stroad makes me sick. Living in these houses sucks ass because the road is SO loud. It's a high-crash corridor that's taken way too many lives in the past years.

public.ridereport.com/pdx Another fun thing you can see here: at SE 35th and Salmon, where the greenway switches from Salmon to Taylor, ridership fans out. People struggle to actually follow the twists and turns of Portland's greenways, and this dumps them at Cesar Chavez without a light!

A high ridership count moving east along salmon, until 35th where ridership splits equally between Main, Taylor, and Salmon. Main and Salmon both have traffic lights at Cesar Chavez but Taylor does not, so this is a pretty alarming experience! I literally had this happen to me multiple times when I first started riding in SE.

talking about portland streets makes me nostalgic for my job ~2018-2021 helping cities collect data about scooter+ebike rideshare programs. check this out: people prefer to take scooters directly on Hawthorne just as much as they'll bother to take the greenway on salmon!

Most noteworthy is that Salmon and Hawthorne have pretty much equal ridership numbers despite Hawthorne having no bike infrastructure whatsoever.
