2021 —> 2025, went digging back in the draft that was my very first attempt at writing this story just to find the original first time they meet vs. where it landed

She opened her eyes to find her own hand, white knuckled and grasping tightly around the mug in her hand. Sitting in the musty but familiar mess hall within the palace barracks. Not bothering to unclench from the mug, she looked up and across the table to meet the milky gray eyes of the woman across the table who had come to question her. The Wandering Order or some such bullshit, the palace had called for them when what remained of Jude's party had returned from the outlands. Other-planars, who apparently understood the blight. Jude had never met other-planars face to face before, and she wasn't entirely sure how she felt about these ones.
The Captain of the guard had sent them to find her in the barrack's mess, which had been blissfully empty until they arrived.

Her memory still snagged on the eerie silence of those creatures clawing through the dark, animals that moved like ghosts.
The sort that only lived in tall tales, in old song, not in the outskirts of your own home.
"Listen, I don't know what they told you, but you haven't seen what I've seen," Jude seethed. "What's out there, in that forest, it's... taken people. If your lot is all the help the Dominion can be bothered to call up, you might well just piss off home and save your-selves."
There was a foreboding calm gathering like a storm cloud in the Herald's features.
She let Jude finish, let her words hang in the quiet chamber. Outside, the old floorboards groaned under the shuffling uncertainty of the Dominion's finest made to wait.
