Arbor Low, a Neolithic henge monument in Derbyshire. It’s interesting to note this is the first time I’ve noticed people leaving things. It’s like a continuation of past repurposing and reverence.
History?? Since when is that a focus beyond being a political propaganda football? It isn’t a core subject timetabled with twice as many lessons. Students have a choice of opting out of history past KS3. Often, SATS takes priority, so pupils come to us woefully unaware of what history actually is.
A memorial to Thomas Wentworth, grandson of Thomas and Margaret. Thomas was the 1st Earl of Strafford and Lord Deputy of Ireland. He was beheaded at Tower Hill. While Charles I had reluctantly signed his death warrant, Thomas was reported to have said “put not your trust in princes.”
The chest tomb of Thomas and Margaret Wentworth complete with their Tudor era accoutrements, constructed in 1587. For context, this is the year before the Spanish Armada was spotted in the English Channel.
The oldest part of the cemetery contains unmarked graves. This is the earliest attempt at memorialising the deceased, dating from the late 17th century.
A unique and funny grave marker in the old cemetery. On the opposite side, the grave marker reads “For goodnes sake, fix this stone up agane”
Wentworth Church and cemetery including the old church and even older cemetery. Pictures of some of the more interesting grave markers I came across included.
We went to say goodbye to our old friend yesterday. The Boy and I love walking around Sherwood Forest. We were both sad to hear about Major Oak as I’m sure people around the world are, too.
Yesterday’s adventure was brought to by my incessant and tangential deep dives. To my knowledge, it’s the northernmost doom painting in England. It’s 14th century and way bigger than internet pictures would have you believe. St Mary and St Martin’s, Blyth, Notts - a mere 10-15 minute drive for me!
Well I don’t see what everyone is complaining about. This copper is perfectly fine. I won’t stand for Ea-Nāsir slander.
New interest unlocked - the appearance of non-tabby coats in art and domestication. I suspect it was when when we made ‘wolves if you squint hard enough’ into lap dogs in the western world.
I’ve got a lovely little stereoscope, dee-dee-lee-dee and now I can see Seti in 3D.
The general fogginess has really helped capture the weird, ghostly factor once associated with Christmas 🖤
“Autism didn’t exist in my day…” Seriously, I survived off of Kraft macaroni and cheese and the odd chicken tender specifically made by my grandmother for years. It’s a miracle I got through early childhood without getting scurvy. Anyways, happy this fella is doing okay now.
Oxfam book shops near universities are 🔥. Homeric hymns, Old and Middle English, and a history of Poland? Yes, please.
This photo was taken around this time of the year in 2023 at an open day at The Boy’s first choice for university. This week, he’ll be showing us around the city as a first year student. 🥺
Moment of silent reflection is still a thing apparently, and this was the sticker from Cobb Co (not my county) www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/334...
