Seen in a basement: Dad Rock and the latest @wfmu.bsky.social program guide.
Makaya McCraven and wondrous band was a joy at the Village Vanguard tonight; unifying core Junius Paul on bass a revelation. Great show! Great to be in that sacred room!
Tonight’s listening: Elvis Costello at Sweetwater in Mill Valley 4/29/89 with a killer band and many guests, including Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, in bootleg CD form.
Bob Dylan at Forest Hills was simply exquisite. I hung on every note and was never not being lifted. Storms held off. Crowd seemed to feel lucky to be there, bc of the weather and also you know Bob Dylan and his incredible band. If I see Saint Annie I’ll tell her thanks a lot.
Animal, Surrender: Peter Kerlin performing solo as Rob Smith was ill.
Tacoma Park (pleasant surprise: duo included my old pal and Gowanus practice space-mate Ben Felton!):
New CD player today (!) and new Parts and Labor // @ejrc.bsky.social
The National, with Aaron Arntz on Hammond and me on second drums, performed Morning Dew on Late Show with Stephen Colbert ten years ago this month.
TGIF: My Bloody Valentine on the hifi down at the ol watering hole
One of my favorite under the radar pizza places in NYC: Mano’s in Ridgewood, Queens.
Current listening: new music out today by BACH ARTILLERIE, Curt Sydnor and Greg Saunier’s keys+drums covers of Bach’s Goldberg Variations canons. As cool as it sounds. // @ejrc.bsky.social
Yo La Tengo celebrating Peter Stampfel at last night’s fundraiser for Brooklyn’s beloved Jalopy Theatre and Music School at the Parish Hall at St. Ann’s church. Set included songs by the Holy Modal Rounders, Michael Hurley, Rutles, Kinks, the Escorts, and more. Just terrific.
Ticket for Bob Dylan at Forest Hills secured, sixty one years on from his first show there. Here’s a poster that hangs in green room/cabin backstage at Forest Hills.
A good and uplifting thing to do these (and all) days is to see Jonathan Richman. Tonight’s early show at Baby’s All Right.
Many treasures at the Jim Irsay Collection auction at Christie’s (this stuff should be in the Smithsonian and and not a fucking private collection) but one fascinating gem is the margin notes to the handwritten lyrics of The Times They Are A-Changin’ (zoom in).
There’s surely a lot of posts already but here’s Michael Stipe singing THESE DAYS tonight at Brooklyn Steel. Fun fact: we walked past each other on Court St today, too.
This beautiful small book, THREE CHORDS AND BLESSED NOISE by @carynrose.bsky.social, arrived a few days ago and I can’t wait to tear through it. A small, immediately published physical tour diary is as up my alley as it gets.
There’s a celebration of Bob Weir tonight at Brooklyn Bowl with music by Bushwick’s Dead. I’ll be DJing pre show and setbreak with my Weirmen/Campfire/Blue Mountain/Day of the Dead/National compadre Scott Devendorf. Come share love with a room of friends. Free ofc. ⚡️🌹
Our aviation-obsessed family had a one night staycation New Year’s Eve at the TWA Hotel. Happy New Year!
Golden Smog covering Brian Wilson last night at their joyous Bowery Ballroom show.
