We went up to a nearby viewpoint about an hour ago & got to observe some of the aerial attack that is happening right now! So much respect for these brave pilots and their crews!!❤️❤️❤️🔥 In the video watch for white plumes on the leading edge of the upper area of the fire - that's the assault area.

Finally recovering energy-wise from Saturday's wildfire evacuation nightmare. Keplar's back to following me everywhere & Casper has come out from under my bed. Times like this that I am grateful that I don't live out at our cabin year round yet. 😅

Awww, she's such a little sweetheart, such a kissable little face! 🥹 For a while I was feeling pretty sure that Casper was just expressing his anxiety by scratching the heck out of himself but I experimentally fed him some tuna-based dog food & now his poor face is scratched to heck & I feel awful.

I'm REALLY behind on posting art! Here are my contributions to this year's Polar Lights zine which is absolutely wonderful & full of art from folks who are absolutely epic.❤️❤️❤️ ⚠️🦭UPDATE: sadly, since I finished the infocomic about them, bearded seals are now classed as Endangered by the ICUN. 😵‍💫

Behold! The bearded seal! The biggest seal in the arctic! (Not to be confused with walruses, which, while related to seals, are not considered seals themselves.)

ICUN Status: Near Threatened (correction: they are now classed as Endangered.)

Bearded seals are named for their voluminous whiskers.

Male bearded seals attract their bearded ladies by singing! Their otherworldly songs can be heard as far away as 20 km/12.4 miles. Males also sing to defend their territories.

(A male bearded seal sings "Ooooooooo...." to which a female on an iceflow responds "I'm STILL not interested, Harold." Poor Harold is sad about this.

Unlike most seal pups, which may take weeks to even months to approach the water much less swim in it, bearded seal pups can swim within mere hours of birth, and they are weaned after only 24 days!

(A glaring mama bearded seal floats between her baby pup in the water and a heavily disappointed polar bear on an iceflow, exclaiming "Take that, stupid bear! My baby ain't no helpless snack!")

Bearded seals are also faster swimmers than polar bears.

Except for moms with pups, bearded seals are solitary, and sleep either lounging on ice flows or fliating vertically in the water like a buoy... which probably creeps out other arctic wildlife.

In another panel we see the bearded seal's peaceful, apparently sleeping face. In the bext, he winks and sticks out his tongue, proving that he was pranking the poor foxes all along.)

Yesterday my reef as an ecosystem turned 3 years old. 🏆🪸 I'm extremely proud of myself for pushing on through the challenges that I have faced in keeping my reef, & I am always working to improve my aquatic husbandry & care. Most new reefers fail in their first year but I've kept going.❤️❤️❤️🐠

Last night we had what might be our last campfire for the year given that full fire ban starts this Friday (which is fine!) & I'm honestly a bit stunned that it didn't start sooner given the state of drought that we're in. Our lake looks like it usually does in SEPTEMBER, yet it's July.

A new air conditioner was acquired! Unfortunately it did cost $100 more than expected but thanks to my Dad/landlord being an awesome dude I was able to get it & now my reef if back to a safe/reasonable temperature (25.5°C.) But... it looks like the heatwave killed my cleaner wrasse, Ribbon. 😞

Hehe here's one more of Keplar being beautiful, this time on the beach, just because! Because Avian Flu is very transmissable to kitties & our lake has many ducks, he isn't allowed to drink lake water/go near bird poop but he enjoys birdwatching under our grand old willow tree.❤️❤️❤️🐾

Some beautiful blue wild forget-me-nots, tiny true blue (not purple like most 'blue' flowers,) blooms with sunny yellow centres!

I have irrigation again!!! 🥹 No more exhausting hauling buckets for hours every evening to water my food forest! No more (hopefully) weird dry tasting black currents! More happy tomatos and rose bushes! Yiss!❤️❤️❤️
