I Worried

I worried a lot. Will the garden grow, will the rivers flow in the right direction, will the earth turn as it was taught, and if not how shall I correct it?
Was I right, was I wrong, will I be forgiven, can I do better?
Will I ever be able to sing, even the sparrows can do it and I am, well, hopeless.
Is my eyesight fading or am I just imagining it, am I going to get rheumatism, lockjaw, dementia?
Finally I saw that worrying had come to nothing.
And gave it up. And took my old body and went out into the morning, and sang.

L: "Hi Light do you want a drink?"

Light (in analysis mode): "What does L mean by that? Is this some kind of test? whatever i'll just pick the left one. but WAIT, what if I pick the left one and L will find out that I'm ambidextrou? i can't let him know that. so i'll pick the right one. that's it"

Light picks the righthand Coca Cola and says "thank you :3"

Light looks at his coke with great stress.
L watches and opens his smugly.

Light sees that the back of his Coca Cola bottle shows a label that says "Kira".

He thinks "DAMN IT HE GOT ME!!!! DAMN L!!!!! hold on a second, just because i chose this bottle, this isn't even evidence! that's right, he just wants to see my reaction! alright L, I see what game you are playing right now. we'll see who will get the FINAL LAUGH"

L looks smug.

i carry a chorus of voices about my crown like unhappy angels
some whose lives went unlived, dear ancestors of near past others who live divinely binary gods unseen
some, ghosts yet to visit and precious, loving few, who say simply, quietly:
"the dearest voice of all is the child who likes puddles, and she lives in the kingdom of heaven still within"

sometimes i wonder what it would be like to be a bird
to lift off the earth and take to the air feel wind on my face make a home of the sky
and watch notions of land and border right and wrong
fall loose from my mind like feathers lost mid-flight
at the sight of the blue of the hills of the clouds, transient and radiant
i would leave no mark on this earth with my search for daily bread

if i were a bird i would spend my hours singing
for the rising sun for the sake of it
not to lament in my heaviness at what this land has become

it’s dove and sparrow trill
through ancient oak trees
that saw the tudors
now fencing tiny oases
amid urban sprawl, for tired folks

it’s 70s wallpaper
and seventy year-old balconies
built on a twelve-high dream
of upward movement
seasoned with cigarette smoke

the kind Nan Sylvie smoked

it’s school yards littered
with languages overseas
Yoruba, Urdu, Igbo,
lilted on tongues with long hopes
of good lives for their little ones

that time there
KA Grape from corner shops
bus journeys to gymnastics
and petty larceny

perhaps, too
the move after, to safer streets
in the country
sophisticated schools
full of folks who’d never known
difference nor city

privileged homes and pretty botany.
that, too, shaped me

but nothing quite hits
like old South London, see?
