AI vervangt

Kunstmatige intelligentie leidt tot afnemende baankansen bij veel beroepen. Vorig jaar was dat bijvoorbeeld al het geval bij grafisch vormgevers, vertalers en tekstschrijvers. Nu zijn ook de kansen voor mensen in de reclamewereld afgenomen, net als bij de klantenservice, waar chatbots mensen vervangen.

"We raden nu af om dit soort beroepen je heil te zoeken", zegt Molleman. "Voor in de toekomst zijn daar door de verdere ontwikkeling van AI echt slechte baankansen."

Sommige uitgevers waren in de afgelopen jaren al begonnen met het uitgeven van Engelse literatuur in het Engels, omdat dat in Nederland in tegenstelling tot Nederlandse literatuur een groeimarkt is. Als het om zo veel boeken gaat, zal woordoverzetten te veel tijd en duiten kosten. De eerste experimenten met woordoverzettingen door Al hebben al plaatsgevonden - niet van literatuur, het waren wat vroeger romannetjes werden genoemd. De kunstmatige woordoverzetters worden steeds beter. Uitgeverij Blauwbaard is de eerste die de hele catalogus tweetalig aanbiedt: in het Nederlands voor de fijnproever, en in het AI-Engels voor de rest van de wereld.

But while Google Translate is relevant
to translation, ChatGPT is not, for a reason that reveals something deep about its limitations.
You can ask ChatGPT to "write a story in the style of Marcel Proust," but that is different from "Translate this particular Proust story into
English": the latter is precisely what ChatGPT can't do, because to translate a story requires reading it. Translation is a kind of writing linked to a kind of reading - a reading of another
text, the original. While Chat-GPT can comb and cull and copy and crib and collage - and to that extent it can "write" - what it can't do is read. This is why it generates references to non-existent legal precedents and fake articles, quotes passages that aren't real, and so on: it is fed with and works with texts, rather than coming into contact with what's actually in
the world.

Warning: AI even hallucinates while translating, adding mistakes and references that are not in the source text. In other words: just having someone proofread your AI-generated translation isn't enough. Hire a professional (who will tell you it'll take less time to translate the text themselves).

According to a report from 404 Media, Wikipedia editors performing routine reviews of the translated articles found basic informational mistakes that weren’t in the articles of the original language, and citations that were missing, swapped, or for book pages that had nothing to do with the subject. (LLMs are particularly bad at documentation, as many lawyers have discovered to their detriment.)

Niets veranderd sinds de 18de eeuw... Uit "Vertalen in de Nederlanden - Een cultuurgeschiedenis" door Dick Schoenaers, Theo Hermans, Inger Leemans, Cees Koster en Ton Naaijkens

Het uitgeven van vertalingen was - mede
gezien het vaak lage auteurshonorarium voor oorspronkelijke werken - niet altijd goedkoper dan het uitgeven van originele werken. De gemiddelde prijs die uitgever Christoph Heinrich Bohn en zijn zoon Francois voor vertalingen betaalden was 5 gulden per blad van 16 pagina's. De Bohns zaten hiermee op één lijn met uitgever Jan ten Brink Gerritszoon (1757-1846) die ook 5 gulden per blad betaalde. Hoe harder de vertaalmachine draaide, hoe geduchter de strijd om de vertaaltarieven. De uitgevers probeerden de honoraria te drukken, de vertalers werden zich steeds bewuster van hun marktwaarde. Johannes Immerzeel (1776-1841) betaalde maar 3 gulden per blad en liet vertalers ook wel voor nog lagere tarieven werken, in ruil voor auteursexem-lplaren of voor de belofte ook hun eigen werk te mogen publiceren. In 1820 weigerde vertaler Jan de Quack (1769-1852) nog langer voor minder dan 4 gulden per blad te werken, ook toen de Gebroeders Diederichs hem lieten weten dat dit een veel te hoog honorarium was: zij betaalden naar eigen zeggen vaak maar 3 gulden of zelfs minder. De Quack (die duidelijk op zijn strepen stond) beet hun toe dat dat dan ook wel te merken zou zijn aan de geleverde kwaliteit... Die 4 gulden lag nog ver onder de 8 gulden per vel die zijn collega Willem Goede wist te bedingen voor het schrijven van
