Last one for a bit I’ll promise. When hiking over the lava you’re frequently walking over lava tubes. You can see one revealed here. The overhang can be really thin too - tapping with my walking stick you can sometimes hear a disconcerting hollow thump.

One of the really interesting features of yesterday’s hike were the islands of trees around which lava had flowed, creating these lily pads of lushness throughout the excursion as well as temporary reprieves from the blowing drizzle.

A shot of me yesterday taken by my son. This is the first hike I’ve done with walking sticks and I’m convinced that was the only way my knees could take the ~8.5 mile path over uneven terrain. Longest hike I’ve done in over a year now since developing a meniscus tear last year. Feeling it today tho.
