Jokubauskaitė & Peeters (2020) found 329 distinct, recurring themed conversations within that torrent. 1 theme alone generated 4.5 million replies. A further 21.7% covered country or state politics. 7.8% focused on war & conflict. Religion, conspiracies & identity politics made up much of the rest.
Studies illustrate the scale of that board . For example - Papasavva et al. (2020) documented 134.5 million posts across 3.3 million threads between 2016–2019, averaging 112,000+ posts every single day. Threads often deleted within 7 days. Not a static archive , a flow.
For context, users did not have accounts, were anon by default. /pol/ Board threads were bumped to top by new replies, so some fell off & were deleted. 4chan saw it as a containment board, a place where distasteful content was corralled so it didn't disrupt the rest of the site.
