I got some good news this week. US Youth Soccer has named me their National Girls Recreation Coach of the Year. I am grateful for EVERYONE who has been there for me on my journey. Love you all.

Throughout her coaching tenure, Julie Curry his consistently displayed a commitment to sportsmanship, player development, and meaningful community impact. Her ability to foster an environment rooted in respect and integrity - with teams that always show humility - has made her a role model for others.

Curry's player-centered coaching creates fun and inclusive training sessions that help encourage her players to seek growth and development, all while creating a love for the game. She is also committed to her own development and actively pursues coaching education, mentorship, and embraces innovative methods to serve her athletes.
In addition to her own team, Curry was a founding coach of Arlington Soccer Girls With Goals, where she was able to expand the benefits of the sport to students in local Title I schools.

My grandpa was one of the crew who painted the Golden Gate Bridge when it was built. He moved from Nebraska to San Francisco during the Great Depression and did all he could as a single parent to support his three children.

This is what a spotted orb weaver made in my doorway yesterday. I ducked hard both ways, going in and out. Not about to displease this spider, who is quite the artist.

In memory of Gemma, an absolute beast who was part of our family and gave us much joy. We will miss her so much.

Gemma, a large black guinea pig with a partial orange stripe. She was a real one. She was sweet, she did not bite, and she also knew how and when to establish her space. She made us all happy. We will miss her very much.

Got to catch a glimpse, not to mention a whiff, of the blooming corpse flower at the U. S. Botanic Gardens in DC today. It did not disappoint. #CorpseFlower

A corpse flower in full bloom. There is a central spadix, which is a yellow-green spear of about two feet in length, and a red efflorescence made up of multiple flowers that look like one giant red bloom. There are some surrounding green plants, as this particular corpse flower is permanently planted in the ground in the Tropical Plants house of the Botanic Garden.

This is the way.

The debate over trans rights in sports may have started with conservatives purporting that they were “just asking questions.” But as my former Ringer colleague Rodger Sherman points out, those arguments—though compelling to some (including, at one point, himself) across the political spectrum—were never actually grounded in issues of fairness. That’s because it is not fair to exclude an entire marginalized group from recreation and its many benefits. There are many legitimate ways to go about protecting women’s sports that don’t pit trans and cis women against each other. One way is to ensure that schools and boosters offer equal scholarship spots and name-image-likeness opportunities to women. And it is telling that on Wednesday, the Department of Education rescinded Biden-era Title IX guidance that called for schools to provide proportionate athletic department resources and revenue-sharing payments to women’s teams. Another way is to hold abusive coaches accountable throughout the college and professional ranks, but the administration is not calling for that. This order does not protect anyone; instead, it risks endangering all women competitors by subjecting them to invasive and troublesome sex testing.
