A 2nd experiment showed faces in full view with different parts of the face concealed, found "extraordinarily high error rates in recognising female faces in laser scans". A 47.9% error rate and 52.6% where various types of masks were used - participants were more likely to fail than be right! 2/

Based on Stephenson's appalling quote, I've followed the evidence for identifying the sex of people by their face. The original study [Bruce et al 1993] asked participants to separate laser scans of (Caucasian) faces. "Laser profiles of females gave rise to high [38.9%] error rates." 1/

Photographs of 88 female and 91 male adults (aged 18 to 30 years) were taken in full face, with a neutral expression, and with each wearing a swimming cap to conceal hair. No makeup was worn by the females and the males were clean-shaven (and had shaved recently). Prints of these pictures were made and the faces cut out from the background to remove all clothing and any stray wisps of hair that might otherwise have been visible. Masking fluid was painted onto the earlobes of all faces to conceal all earrings (some photos had been taken with studs left in inadvertently) and earpiercing holes. The photographs were given to 13 subjects unfamiliar with the faces shown in the photographs and the subjects were asked to sort, without time constraints, the photographs into two piles according to sex. Performance was highly accurate (96.0% correct). The majority (3/4) of the errors were made in judging female faces as male: overall accuracy for female faces was 93.8% compared with 98.2% with the male.

Asked about new guidance on single sex spaces, Andy Burnham said: "I think the time has come to take the Supreme Court ruling and the guidance and implement it, but to do it in a way that protects those spaces but does not marginalise already marginalised communities, that's my view.
"My mum and dad brought me up to live and let live. I think Britain needs to get back to a more live and let live' approach to life, not where we're constantly arguing with each other, being judgmental about each other.
"Lets implement the guidance, but to do it in the fairest and most compassionate way possible."
He said he thought Britain had done too much of rerunning arguments. "We've got to stop arguing with each other. We've got to start by finding some common ground and start pulling together," he added.

A Counterexample to the Mizohata-Takeuchi Conjecture

We derive a family of estimates of the X-Ray transform of positive measures in , which we use to construct a -loss counterexample to the Mizohata-Takeuchi conjecture for every hypersurface in that does not lie in a hyperplane. In particular, multilinear restriction estimates at the endpoint cannot be sharpened directly by the Mizohata-Takeuchi conjecture.
