UGH any opportunity to shit on welfare. To him if you're on welfare, you contribute nothing, if you can't work, you must just be a leech who brings nothing to society. Also if they need multiple jobs you've failed as a society, you've failed as a government.

He also repeated previous comments backing migrants, saying they came to New Zealand leaving everything behind and worked "really hard, they take one job, they take two jobs, three jobs to get a deposit for a house or a business ... they don't go on welfare, and they get their kids and they wake up every day and get them to school".

Chlöe Swarbrick: Can the Prime Minister please articulate clearly for this House and the people of New Zealand exactly what specific economic or job benefit there may be in the long run for New Zealanders with regard to the consenting of hyperscale AI data centres?

Rt Hon CHRISTOPHER LUXON: Great—well, let me step the member through it. As I’ve said, data centres are critical infrastructure for a modern economy. All of us are going to be reliant on data centres. As we look out over the next 10 years, there will be a fourfold increase in demand needed for data centres. We have significant natural advantages: highly renewable, cool climates, good political stability, and—here’s the part—data centre investment does work. If we can get it working for New Zealand, it can support jobs and productivity. It can increase electricity generation. It is important to our data sovereignty, it’s important for our resilience, and it’s important for our national security. So data centres, we need to embrace; we just need to make sure we’ve got some sensible rules and principles around it.

The minister decided to repeat a method of how someone self harmed twice in her speech in a way I view as incredibly irresponsible. Other politicians mentioned harmful behaviours such as eating disorders and suicides BUT they did not mention the methods.

Stanford, speaking to a select committee inquiry into the harm young people encounter online on Wednesday, began by citing a personal case:

“I want to start by recounting a story of a young girl that I met at an event around social media and young people’s use of it, where she recounted a story of her experiences online and how that she learned the destructive behaviour of [self-harm].”

The minister said the girl’s experience highlighted the dangerous content that can be found on social media platforms.

“This behaviour, said to her through a social media algorithm with a destructive intent, [was used to] to teach herself how to self-harm using an everyday object from her home, that she then did.”

New Zealand has formally rejected amendments to international health regulations, implemented by the World Health Organization following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The decision, communicated to the WHO overnight Monday, makes New Zealand one of just 12 nations to reject the rules. Of these, seven said they had rejected the amendments as they needed more time to finally implement them. But the Ministry of Health provided no justification for New Zealand’s rejection.

The amendments were finalised in 2024, after international negotiations co-chaired by former Director-General of Health Sir Ashley Bloomfield. They establish a new alert level for global health emergencies (the pandemic level), which would allow for greater coordination between countries and allow the WHO to issue non-binding recommendations to member states. The changes also strengthen equitable access to medicines.

Dr HAMISH CAMPBELL (National—Ilam) (16:06): I rise to speak in support of the Employment Relations Amendment Bill. We have heard a lot of hyperbole from the other side about the attacks on people, and, actually, we’ve heard this all before. We heard this when we ended the war on landlords—and what was the result of that? Rents have gone down, there’s been an increase in rental stock, and we’ve ended up with a better outcome for New Zealanders. Most people realise it is a tight relationship between employer and employee. Our laws have become more complex, making it harder for them to reach a solution that works. We have heard things about these big multinational companies. Well, let’s think about that: 97 percent of businesses in New Zealand are small to medium enterprises—that is mum and dad employers employing the person down the road who is trying to get ahead, not what the other side is trying to portray. We need labour laws where people can have flexibility and we can get what we need out of both sides. This bill goes some way to addressing that—therefore, I commend it to the House.

But there's another reason why it felt close to home for many New Zealanders. The Kiwi Jewish community has, sadly, like so many around the world in the past two years, received an intensification of hate mail, threats, and harassment since 7 October 2023. Horror and events in the Middle East have bled into anti-Semitism at home. Sadly, some politicians have allowed it to happen and shamefully, others have encouraged it.

Just this weekend a sign was displayed outside the Jewish school Kadimah, on Remuera Rd in the Epsom electorate and it said, "One-State Solution, Palestine for Everybody." Is there anyone with the gall here who can deny the resemblance of the slogan on that sign to chanting, "Palestine must be free, from the river to the sea"?

"The choice for New Zealanders is: do you want the money tied up in Chorus debt, or do you want a new hospital or a school? It's that simple."

She's making it an individual issue rather than something we should be addressing as a society that has a problem with alcohol which is hurting everyone.

Speaking at Auckland's Lula Inn on Thursday morning, Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee said the shake-up was about cutting red tape and restoring "fairness and practicality".

"Most New Zealanders who choose to drink alcohol do so responsibly," McKee said. "Responsible drinkers should not be penalised because of the behaviour of a few who do not drink safely."
