started reading le guin's book on writing (one of them anyway) and it's already one of the most actionable books on craft that i've seen. i love the way she talks about the mindset you should approach these exercises with

I want you to write for pleasure—to play. Just listen to the sounds and rhythms of the sentences you write and play with them, like a kid with a kazoo. This isn't "free writing," but it's similar in that you're relaxing control: you're encouraging the words themselves the sounds of them, the beats and echoes—to lead you on. For the moment, forget all the good advice that says good style is invisible, good art conceals art. Show off! Use the whole orchestra our wonderful language offers us!

Write it for children, if that's the way you can give yourself permission to do it. Write it for your ancestors. Use any narrating voice you like. If you're familiar with a dialect or accent, use it instead of vanilla English. Be very noisy, or be hushed. Try to reproduce the action in the jerky or flowing movement of the words. Make what happens happen in the sounds of the words, the rhythms of the sentences. Have fun, cut loose, play around, repeat, invent, feel free.

"Hmm. There is just a little bit of inflammation, but it's not so bad."

Grace did her best to hold her tongue still and hold in her drool while Doctor—was she actually a doctor?—Szynski poked around in her mouth with two gloved fingers and shone a flashlight at the back of her throat. She never liked the texture of nitrile, all powdery and goose-bumped. The doctor moved her fingers under Grace's tongue; pushed it up to the roof of her mouth and looked at its underside.

"I can give you some antibiotics for that, if you want. New stuff."

Grace gave a little negatory grunt, and shook her head. The last time the doc had given her antibiotics, she broke out all over in rashes and was itchy for days. It was awful.

"Sorry, I'll hold the questions. I'm almost done here. God, you've gotta get to a dentist soon... You sure you don't want the antibiotics? I'll throw in an extra hundred today."

She removed her fingers from Grace's mouth, peeled off the gloves, and wheeled over to her drawer.

"Look, I dunno, you remember last time—"

"These are totally different!" The doc pulled out a little vial and a few packets of syringes and needles. Grace bristled, but Dr. Szynski waved a hand and blew a curt raspberry. "I know, I know, but maybe you could convince your girl to help you out with it. Doesn't she do injections?"

"Yeah, but-"

"Perfect! How about an extra one-fifty, for the phobia? Plus the two hundred when you bring the survey back, of course."

Grace took a sharp breath in. "Fine."

The doctor gave her a look that was becoming familiar. Her hazel eyes softened, blinking more frequently. Her thin mouth drew thinner as she tucked in her lips. Grace interpreted it as a sort of pity, decidedly not solidarity; a light concern, but not concern enough to act beyond her own self-interest. Her face shifted again, and she busied herself with paperwork, before Grace could change her mind.

Watching Christina fuck her mom was enshrined into Lia's routine alongside everything else. She didn't dread it though-- far from it, she waited with breathless anticipation all day long. And after only a handful of identical days, the routine became ritual; a practiced sequence of devotion and quiet observation. The longer the cycle stretched on, the easier it was for Lia to collapse completely into her new identity, to allow herself to be guided by her mom and Ms. Morris.

By the time she would finally get back home each evening, she'd be desperate for her dose of tea. Besides getting to watch Ms. Morris and her mom, it was her favorite part of the whole day; the immediate relief swept through every inch of her, and dulled her back into docility. It was wonderful. From that moment until she woke up the next morning, Lia lived in the clouds, blissfully vacant to her own unbecoming.
