What’s I’m spinning tonight— Floating Point and Pharaoh Sanders - Promises Joe Hisaishi - The Boy and the Heron OST Joanna Newsom - Divers Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel…
Today’s meal was a summer borscht, shrimp with homemade cocktail sauce, and a martini. Our movie was the arthouse classic Tarkovsky’s The Sacrifice, and our evening was relaxing.

Our seventh and final movie of this marathon is a pick by Sam. Her follow up to Sorcerer is pretty perfect and a nice tonal treat after some heavy (though all great) films. Yeah, we’re going to be irresponsible with explosives in the jungle again—Tropic Thunder.
We each have one more pick, so mine last one (film no. 6) continues the idea of the elements—the rain in The Wailing was so omnipresent that I picked a film with a memorable rain scene—William Friedkin’s Sorcerer. Plus the director of The Exorcist, which would have been another good follow up.
Sam’s follow up to Eva is our fifth film—The Wailing. Some more religious horror to follow up the Christ imagery in the previous film of our Film Telephone.
We took a break in Film Telephone at about 40 min into Nope last night for, you know, sleep. Finished it this morning, and now onto my follow up, film no. 4, and I’m sticking with giant alien creatures of the sky… Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion
Sam’s follow up to the Lynch film is our film no. 3… Nope. Going with the horror investigation of Hollywood aspect of both films, but the rabbit television show made Sam think of the Gordy stuff in Inland Empire.
My follow up is… Inland Empire. Another film that ends with a Nina Simone needledrop.
Sam and I are playing #FilmTelephone, where we watch a movie and alternate follow ups. It can follow up for any reason. We are starting with a random number generator and our film collection. So here we go—film 1 is… Before Sunset.
What I’m spinning tonight: D’Angelo, Sufjan, Vampire Weekend, Lana Del Rey, . . .
Over the past year, Sam and I watched Cowboy Bebop for the first time—it’s a very cool show! It takes us forever to get through shows, and we wanted to celebrate finishing this one with its movie. So Sam made some black pepper beef stir fry over rice to go with the film. Delicious.

So today we watched Hughes’ fighter pilot drama Hell’s Angels and the original 1932 Scarface (which he produced). For our Wine and Dine, Sam made chicken Philly sandwiches and homemade beer-battered onion rings. A horseradish sauce made for excellent dipping.
Sam and I revisited Melvin and Howard this past week—about Howard Hughes leaving his money to a guy who ran a gas station—and we own several movies produced by the Aviator himself.
#LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched Jonathan Demme + Sheep Detectives watch with my two year old over three viewings. We also saw like 75% of Toy Story 5 in theaters as her first movie. I’ll eventually find out what happens to those Buzz Lightyears.

We’re watching a bunch of movies directed by Jonathan Demme, and tonight for our wine and dine we watched Married to the Mob, to go with a vodka sauce chicken cutlet sandwich and a chilled Pinot Grigio.
A couple of comedies that came out 50 years ago (one good, one bad), a classic documentary of queer black cinema, and a new Pixar with my daughter. #LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched
I got my Vinegar Syndrome order from their 50% sale today. Three Cinematographes (Altman and two Demmes) and two trailer compilations from the American Genre Film Archive. Plus a couple of Cinematographe magazines with some intriguing interviews and essay. Good movie delivery day.

I grilled chicken with Sam’s Alabama white bbq sauce (horseradish for the win). The sauce also made for great dipping for sweet potato fries. Side of corn on the cob completes the meal. We paired the food with a citrusy Boulevard Wheat and a first time viewing of Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
