An old locomotive engineer drinking deeply from the boulevardier of broken dreams, if not drinking really good coffee. Remember the miraculous absurdly of being alive. “It’s a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace, and a wound that will never heal”.
Yes. He’s never lived a single moment of happiness or joy. He’s no idea what it means to feel love for another, romantic or platonic, or friendship, let alone what it is to feel empathy for any living creature. If he weren‘t so evil, even satanic, he’d be pathetic, even pitiable. He is this.
Please forgive me, dear lady, I was a road pool railroader oft getting called unexpectedly to work…with little no rest…on call 24/7. Grinding up the 80 mile canyon at 2 am, 10 mph in notch 8, with 12,000 feet and 14,000 tons, you’ll drink anything harsh enough to keep you awake!
That’s cool. If you like unusual weather, I took a strange few. Here’s one, a snow burst about 1/4 mile across from the cab of my locomotiv.
arguing/agreeing/laughing on the sidewalk. Konbanwa, fellas. I said. They looked at me. “What did you think?“ One replied: “it’s Lynch, he makes the film dream that is beautiful, sexual and tragic, but never lies.” I nodded, smiled and walked away. Couldn’t have said it better if I tried.
Finished. now my wife can take fresh baked promised to work later this AM. Kind of looks like Star Trek‘s Devil in the Dark monster only with leprosy, but believe me, it’s delicious. Recipe goes back to the 1700s. Cut into squares, warm, with butter and cold milk, it’s heaven. Going back to bed.
For what it’s worth, here’s my favorite engine. This is in 1987 at the “Soo Line“ convention. The engine is WC&C #1, a little 1913 Montreal ten wheeler. She was a sweetheart of an engine. I was in the cab in this very photo. If I was rich, I’d buy her and fix her up new. A happy thought.
Oh yes, have ridden the Shinkasen Tokyo to Kyoto. It’s like that, wonderful. Still prefer this.
Oh, I was a locomotive engineer out here in red rock country for over 30 years. A lot of my life has been like that line from the original Blade Runner: “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe”. Nice to meetcha, btw. I’m Dana.
Not wrong. 40 years of lies and poison directly injected into our political bloodstream by that moldering carcass Ailes, and that still living carcass Murdoch, has resulted in a US that will never be a united nation in my lifetime. How far we have fallen. Below is our road to a depleted future.
An old Japanese-American truck farmer from Hawaii, when asked by a reporter which side he wanted to win the war; the U.S.A. or Japan, replied: “When your mother and father are fighting, you don’t want anyone to win, you just want them to stop fighting.”
To all romantics, wounded and disillusioned out there, all the people who have had relationships, sexual and otherwise, that ended…for some reason now long forgotten, yet still remember their former friends and lovers with fondness, I have an answer now I’m old. We love to fall in love, don’t we?
Yes. luxuriate in your existence on this beautiful blue-green Marble we’ve got, as it spins through an unimportant outer suburb of our small, unimportant galaxy. And yes, ”busy” is wrongly celebrate. Take it from an old man…it’s all so brief.
It has been difficult, given I can barely read kanji. Had to cross reference multiple publications to get round that, but beyond railways let me show you one of my favorite books, below, photos of simple patterns and colors in rice fields, yet to me they are so beautiful. Nature’s own art.
At one point I wanted to build a model railroad based in the Hakone region, and set in the Meiji period. Towards that goal, on one of my trips, and the Tenshodo store In Gonzales, I bought this: a model of the worlds first 2-8-2 steam locomotive built by Baldwin in the USA for the Nippon Railway.
This is Joseph Denman. He was made famous as the Commander of the HMS Wanderer, a ship in the Royal Navy’s West Africa Squadron, a detachment focused on the utter destruction of the West African slave trade. Denman apparently had an evangelical zeal for the abolition of slavery, and waged an 1
Heard a buzzing today about front of our living room. It was a bumble bee! Didn’t want her to become stressed, so quickly captured her in a small jar with a piece of cardstock. Took her out to our front garden alive with flowers where she flew happily off. Did my job on earth today. 🙂
He returned with 3 Kuroiwa calendars in exchange my UP employee’s calendar. I was so surprised, I’m sure I made a fool of myself bowing deeply and thanking him in Japanese.😂. Later, I discovered the photos of Naotaka Hriota. Most exciting treasure hunt of my life. Here’s my last painting.
He was a Lt., like my own father in the IJN, somehow miraculously survived and was employed by JNR, photographed and filmed Japanese SL, and painted and painted. I don’t want his work to die out. He was so good, like Hokusai- San‘s Manga. So essential…even to western artists.
Yeah, you don't know the half of it. I love with all my heart Japan and her people, I have my favorite cheap hotels In Minami-Senju, my favorite all railway bookstores in Jimbo-Cho. became a student of Meiji-era railways and found my favorite artist…Yasuyoshi Kuroiwa. Oh, what art.
Anyway, here’s the note. Finished 1AM the night before we left. Needed a re-wright. I usually sign off my noted with a Townes lyric: “May the sunshine walk beside you“. 1 am. Spaced it. I tell you this because I’ve come to trust you. 5. and end.
Miss Kitty, I have a Q to ask. May I send a DM? i feel I know you well enough, and want to tell you some of my very strange, yet wonderful life…if you desire to hear a lot or a little of it. And don’t worry. This is my idea of a Dick pic.
Best thing really, makes Kafka’s metamorphosis seem rather tame. Right. On to nicer things. Here’s what looks to be a painting from my childhood “Summer Begins”.
Including the greatest of the steam road interurbans: the Sacramento Northern, Which ran over 5% grades from a city block sized yard in Oakland, through tunnels and on a ferry all the way to Chico. Freight lasted until 1965.
Watercolor by Howard Fogg, dean of American Railroad artists, 2917-1996. A depiction of a winter passenger train out of Denver Union Station on the Colorado & Southern narrow gauge, bound for Leadville. Engine 60, formerly of the Utah & Northern, is preserved in Idaho Springs, Co.
Why the fuck do I read these things in tRumpvoice while doing the accordion hands? No fucking idea. maybe I’m going crazy too? 😬
To the Boston & Maine Waltham interlocking tower, built in the 20s. steam had gone by then, but still the excitement built as I mounted the stairs hand in hand with grandpa. We got to the upper level, and into a room that smelled of oiled steel and wood, and leather and kerosine and pipe smoke. 2.
Visit her in her alpine pasture by her little stream where moose rest and calves are birthed…and why am I crying writing this? If You live long enough, you lose all the beings that you love, human or not. So it goes. Molly always ran in and posed for every single picture. What a character.🙂
