This was a couple weeks ago, but when we took a drive up into #RMNP on my birthday we saw this young bull moose near the cabin on Old Fall River Road. This is at about 10,800". Very neat to see him! (Shot with a 5x telephoto lens, of course. I'm not approaching a fucking moose!)

I grew up nearby-ish in NW PA. (Buffalo and Pittsburgh, about equadistant were our nearest big cities.) The Allegheny National Forest area is also lovely. My hometown is almost smack in the center of the ANF. Rimrock and Kinzua Bridge State Park are great spots.

To be clear, I know you are not responsible for another reporter's story. That's what I recognize isn't exactly fair. But this is in the same publication, and I do question @wired.com's commitment to good faith treatment of queer people and issues after this.

I see this is in Wired. Are any of the gay mafia who supposedly control Silicon Valley in the list? I know this isn't entirely fair, but that really has cast a pall over the publication for me. Knowing this is how I'm seen by the editorial staff really has lowered my trust in the magazine.

I introduced some online friends to this movie just tonight! We didn't watch it or anything, but they'd never heard of it. It was one of my favorites growing up!! And as an adult, I recognize a genuinely good moral about found family. My parents and I still reference this bit!

I'm pretty sure the closest thing my podunk hometown has to a megastructure is the old Holgate Toy Company smokestack. It was a remnant of their old original factory location that never got torn down. But it never felt very ominous.

I keep meaning to get a "real" camera again. But I get such good photos on my 8 Pro. And it's compact and light, easy to take on a hike. This was from our backyard two nights ago, and the colors are pretty true to life, something else that I'm pretty pleased about with the Pixels.

A wider shot of the previous scene, but a bit earlier and oranger. Above the smaller bands, there's a wide patch of orange-lit clouds, and above that some wispy, cotton candy pink clouds.

A narrower version of the previous shot, showing off the mountain and lower orangey-pink clouds better. There are smaller, thinner bands lower down, and one bug thick band of cloud just above the middle of the image.

A nearly identical shot to the previous, but it's a bit later, and the color of the clouds is leaning more pink than orange.

I really liked having her around. She was a really pretty animal. I was hoping for melanistic babies, too, as the one male squirrel seemed to be pursuing her. I think, at least. It was the right time of the year for a litter.

Not to be too much of a braggart, but this is where we saw that first marmot I photographed.

And yellow bellied marmots are actually ground squirrels too! (Also shot within 40 miles of our house, at 10,000-12,000 ft of elevation. They stay pretty high up.)

We also have golden mantled ground squirrels in the mountains. This was about 30 miles west of our house and almost a mile higher. (not a chipmunk; those have pointy ears)

We had a melanistic fox squirrel who used to hang out in our back yard. Fairly closely related to the eastern gray squirrel whose black morph you would have been seeing there. Used to occasionally see those in the woods as a kid in Pennsylvania.

I was just some high schooler, and I got to see an actual operating nuclear reactor with my own two eyes! It was at the bottom of a deep pool, glowing blue from Cherenkov radiation, and we were assured that the many feet of water was an adequate shield. Clearly the experience has stuck with me!

The Steam Deck controls that it's based on are quite good. And Valve seems to do their homework on this stuff. Worth noting that the original Steam Controller was pretty odd looking, too, and I still really like using mine. Plus, early reviews seem positive on comfort.

The Steam Controller is a tidy chonker of a gamepad with a broad, Duke-like face holding two square trackpads beneath the standard analog sticks and face buttons. Despite its extra girth, the Steam Controller feels light, slim and balanced, even in my smaller-than-average hands. The grips are slender and have four circular rear buttons, two per side, that are super satisfying to click even when they don’t do anything in-game. The bumpers, triggers, D-pad and face buttons are shiny black plastic, and all of the controller’s edges are rounded, allowing for a smooth glide between the bumpers and triggers especially. The trackpads don’t get in the way when you don’t need them, but in-use, they’re incredibly sensitive and kind of mesmerizing. They look and feel just like the trackpads on the Steam Deck, following the trails of your thumbs with miniature popping bubbles.

Trees frame the view of the sky, and above the yellow-orange of the thicker, lower sunset-lit clouds, the sky goes back to blue, with thin wispy cirrus clouds higher up.
