RIP Sam Neill. Will obviously be remembered for Jurassic Park, but he was also so good in The Piano and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Could do chilling horrors as well as warm comedies. A stately presence that will be greatly missed.

If you were lucky enough to see (or are looking forward to seeing) Sean Wang’s Dìdi, his Oscar-nominated short NǍI NAI & WÀI PÓ is now on Disney+ and is a must-watch. Inventive and rather beautiful.

FOE (at LFF): Not a disaster but considering the cast (who are all fine) and intriguing sci-fi plot, nothing ever feels right with it. Underdeveloped and overwrought, the film fails to spin its paranoia and marriage tension into anything engaging. 2/5.
THE KILLER (at LFF): David Fincher’s latest is a jolty action thriller with a regimented narrative. It’s fine – methodical but lacking. Michael Fassbender's performance is suitably cold and angular. Great cameos from Charles Parnell and Tilda Swinton. Cycles through The Smiths’ greatest hits. 3/5
